23:23   Maharashtra: 'Encounter specialist' Daya Nayak suspended
Police sub-inspector and 'encounter specialist' Daya Nayak has been suspended from Maharashtra Police.

A government official said that Daya Nayak has been suspended. He, however, declined to comment on what led to this development.

Nayak, who was reinstated in service in June 2012, was last year transferred to Nagpur, pending inquiries against him. However, he did not join duty there.

A 1995-batch police officer, Nayak was under suspension for nearly six-and-a-half years after the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested him in 2006 following complaints by former journalist Ketan Tirodkar that he owned assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The ACB had also arrested his two friends, who lent their names to the transfer of his wealth.

22:19   When Farooq shouted at RAW Chief during Kandahar hijack
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah shouted at the then RAW Chief A S Dulat for "hours together" during their meeting after a decision was taken to release three hardcore militants in exchange for the freedom of the passengers of the hijacked Indian Airlines plane in 1999, it was recalled today.

Dulat, the former head of Research and Analysis Wing, also said that Farooq felt the decision by the Union Government was a "mistake" and he had stormed off their meeting to call on Governor Girish Chander Saxena with an intention to resign.

When the hijacking took place on December 24, the Crisis Management Group "goofed up" the entire case by not immobilising the plane when it had landed in Amritsar, "No one was willing to take a decision and in that confusion no instructions were passed on to Punjab Police which had moved in its personnel.

They carried on debating and the plane flew off," Dulat said in an interview to Karan Thapar on his India Today TV programme.

The BJP government goes on damage control mode over the deboarding to passengers to accommodate a minister

Union aviation minister PA Gajapathi Raju said the government apologised to all passengers who were inconvenienced. "We will avoid such incidents in the future and will ensure such incidents don't recur, but it's too small a issue to pull the PM into," Raju said.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju was at the centre of a controversy for delaying an Air India flight from Leh to Delhi for about an hour and for offloading three of its passengers, including a child, allegedly to accommodate him and his aide.

According to sources, the aircraft doors were shut for takeoff on June 24 but the flight did not depart at its scheduled time as Rijiju, along with his PA, had not boarded the flight.

When Rijiju finally arrived, three passengers were allegedly deboarded to accommodate the minister and his PA, sources said.

While an Air India spokesman said it has sought more details on the incident, Rijiju claimed it was not a "delay" as the departure of the flight was "preponed" due to technical reasons.

DCW chairperson Singh, whose terms ends on July 18, said that "every woman is a victim of AAP be it Shakuntala Gamblin, Lipika Bharti, the victim in Vishwas' case or Barkha Singh".

16:05   Pet dog gnaws to the bone leg of Oz owner
Not for the faint-hearted.

A man, who was found dead in a home in suburban Australia, had his right leg missing and the left one gnawed to the bone by his pet dog, a media report said today.

The 49-year-old man, who was not named, was last seen four weeks earlier and lived by himself in a suburb of Geelong, the Geelong Advertiser reported.

Police said officers had been called to a home on Sparks Rd, Norlane, on Tuesday for a welfare check after neighbours reported persistent barking from a dog inside it.

"Police looked through the door at the rear of the house and saw a male on the bed," Sergeant David Magher told the newspaper.

"His right leg was missing and the other gnawed to the bone. The dog inside the unit appeared to be extremely aggressive so council rangers were called in to restrain the dog."

The report said that the man's solitary death went unmissed and unmourned for up to a month but it was not clear whether the man was already dead when the dog starting eating his leg.

"His dog, we presume his one true mate and companion, did what nature would intend him to do. Starving, he mauled his master's legs," the report said. Sergeant David Magher, who confirmed the police's gruesome find, said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

The dog was restrained and Geelong council's health and local laws officer Steve Sodomaco said council officers and Geelong Animal Welfare Services staff would conduct an assessment to determine its future.

The council staff who went to the house were "understandably shaken by the incident and we are looking after their welfare", he added.

14:25   Fadnavis must apologise for causing flight delay: Chavan
Seizing on reports that an Air India flight for US was delayed for about an hour by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Congress leader and former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan today demanded an apology from him for causing inconvenience to over 200 passengers.

"If Fadnavis did request for delaying the flight, then he must apologise," Chavan said, referring to reports in a section of media that the flight was held up as one of the officials accompanying the Chief Minister forgot to carry proper travel documents with him.

"Nobody can delay the flight except for safety reasons. By interfering with the flight procedure, Fadnavis inconvenienced the hundreds of passengers on board," the senior Congress leader said.

"There should be an in-depth probe to ascertain which Air India officer accepted a verbal request by the Chief Minister and delayed the flight by over an hour," he said.

"If it is proved that Fadnavis made a request to Air India for delaying the flight, then he is responsible. Action must be taken against him (that officer) for interfering with the airline safety," he said.

"I have already demanded a full fledged probe by the Civil Aviation Ministry and sought action against whoever was responsible for the flight delay. Only a thorough inquiry can find whether Fadnavis is telling the truth or if the Air India officials are telling the truth," Chavan said.

08:16   Lalit Modi's extradition may take a year
Notwithstanding the Union government's claim of fast-tracking extradition proceedings against the former IPL chief Lalit Modi, it may take almost a year for the Enforcement Directorate even to secure an Interpol red-corner notice against him in the money-laundering case.

The ED is pursuing 17 cases against Modi and other former office-bearers of BCCI-IPL under the Foreign Exchange Management Act and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, involving about Rs. 2,200 crore.

A senior government official  said that the ED was yet to serve a notice of personal appearance on the former IPL chairman in the case. Since Modi was in London, it would be a time-consuming process, as the agency would have to serve a notice through the home and the external affairs ministries.

03:26   Moody's cuts Greece rating deeper into junk territory
Moody's has cut its credit rating for Greece to a deep-junk "Caa3", warning it is now less likely that official creditors will support the country, whatever happens in Sunday's referendum.

The one-notch cut took Greece's rating to just two steps above "default", and came after both the expiration of the country's European Union bailout program without a replacement on Tuesday, and Athens's default on its debt to the International Monetary Fund.

While the country and official creditors are now awaiting the results of the upcoming referendum on accepting a recast EU rescue plan, Moody's said yesterday the referendum "adds a further, more acute, risk to private creditors."

"Moody's believes that without ongoing support from official creditors, Greece will default on its privately-held debt," the ratings agency said.

It said it will review the outcome of the referendum for a possible further downgrade, with the next step being "Ca", indicating "default imminent."

A "no" vote on Sunday, Moody's said, "would likely increase the risk of exit from the euro area which would impose significant losses on private sector creditors."

02:22   Amarnath Yatra on terror target; army begins Operation Shiva
NDTV reports: Pakistan terror groups have sent members to Jammu and Kashmir with orders to plan fidayeen or suicide attacks targeting the annual Amarnath Yatra, intelligence sources told NDTV.

Central paramilitary forces and the local police have deployed another 10,000 people to protect the devotees and the two commonly used routes to the shrine.

02:21   Defiant Greek PM vows referendum will go ahead
Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras today vowed to go ahead with a controversial bailout referendum despite pressure from European leaders as they declined to consider any fresh debt offer before Sunday's vote.

Hours after Greece became the first advanced economy to default on an IMF repayment, the leftist leader used a live TV address to urge Greeks to vote 'No' on Sunday to creditors' current demands.

Tsipras, at loggerheads with Greece's creditors since his election in January, insisted a 'No' vote would "not signify a rupture with Europe" despite efforts by EU leaders to cast it as a referendum on Greece's place in the bloc.

"Come Monday, the Greek government will be at the negotiating table after the referendum, with better terms for the Greek people," he added, standing between Greek and EU flags.

His comments came after Greece yesterday made a last-minute proposal for a third bailout worth nearly 30 billion euros (USD 33 billion) to follow the two rescue programmes worth 240 billion euros that cash-strapped Athens has received since 2010.

Frustrated eurozone finance ministers agreed today to wait until after the referendum before holding any more talks, saying there were "no grounds" for further discussions.

Most Greeks are still only allowed to withdraw 60 euros (USD 66) per day after capital controls.

02:20   Cubans hail diplomatic ties with US
As word spread that the United States will soon turn its interests section into a full-fledged embassy in Havana, Cubans standing outside the mission voiced hope for a better future.

Hundreds of Cubans wait at a square nicknamed the "Park of Sighs" for hours every day for their turn to enter the nearby interests section in the hope of getting a visa.

"They should have done this many years ago," said Freddy Torres, 40, among the crowd at the park.

The interests section, a building on Havana's famous seafront Malecon boulevard, opened in 1977, some 16 years after the United States broke relations with communist Cuba.

But later this summer US Secretary of State John Kerry is expected to travel to Havana for a ceremony that would include the raising of the US flag outside the embassy.

US President Barack Obama and Cuban counterpart Raul Castro exchanged letters on Wednesday stating that diplomatic relations will be restored on July 20.

The Cuban government indicated that it will open its mission in Washington that same day, but no date has been set for the ceremony to open the US embassy in Havana.

02:20   Oregon latest US state to legalise recreational pot
Oregon today became the fourth US state to allow the recreational use of marijuana, amid a growing legalisation trend in the western United States.

The changes in the northwestern state's law come after voters in November approved a ballot measure making it legal to smoke, grow and own pot, though the drug remains illegal under federal law.

From now on, people in Oregon aged 21 and up can legally use marijuana for recreational purposes and grow up to four plants.

While marijuana remains illegal under federal law, more than 20 states have allowed it for medical use and many others are considering legislation to legalise it.

Alaska, Colorado and Washington state already allow recreational use under legislation similar to that now in force in Oregon.

According to a recent report by the ArcView market research group, 14 more US states will legalize recreational marijuana by 2020.
