Veteran freedom fighter, wife die on same day

Veteran freedom fighter Rattan Chand (97) and his wife Shanti Devi (88) died at their native village Saloh in Palampur sub-division, about 10 kms from here, today.

According to family sources, the couple was unwell for some time and Shanti Devi breathed her last at about 10 in the morning. Her husband Rattan Chand died later in the evening.

The couple is survived by two sons and a daughter.

Both were cremated with state honours in the evening and Palampur DSP Navdeep Singh and a police contingent gave them the last salute.

Hundreds of villagers attended the funeral.

The district administration through the SDM Palampur gave immediate financial assistance of Rs 10,000 each to the next of kin of the deceased.
