The 10 biggest Oscar snubs ever

Today should be a day full of joy for Hollywood, as the Academy Award nominations were announced. 

But one thing film industry insiders and cultural commentators like to dissect even more than the nominations is who and what is missing.

Today, outrage is focused on David Oyelowo being overlooked for best actor for his performance as Martin Luther King Jr in Selma. 

That movie's director, Ava DuVernay, also failed to score a nomination. And The Lego Movie, a film widely praised by critics, was shut out of best animated feature. Analysing so-called snubs like these is a time-honoured tradition for the Academy Awards. 

But these oversights continue a tradition of alleged error nearly as old as the Academy itself. 

The following 10 are perhaps the most egregious in Oscar history films, directors, composers and performances that have stood the test of time even if they failed to be nominated.
