National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has been told to rush to Colombo to interact with the new government in Sri Lanka. In a turn of events unthinkable just a few weeks ago, Sri Lankans seem to have voted out two-term President Mahinda Rajapaksa, opting instead for 63-year-old former Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena.

Whenever a new dispensation assumes office, India extends the courtesy of offering political guidance to the neighbouring country.

During former PM PV Narasimha Rao's tenure, it was then Principal Secretary Amar Nath Varma who along with two top diplomats rushed to Colombo during a change of government in Sri Lanka.

Similarly, former PM Dr Manmohan Singh had sent TKA Nair, Principal Secretary to meet Rajapakshe on the day the Sri Lanka poll results were announced heralding his win.
