UN Ebola chief hails successes, warns of fatigue
The head of the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response on Thursday hailed Liberia's success in the fight against the deadly Ebola virus, but warned against complacency now that the number of cases has dropped.

"What I've seen is that the level of awareness is very strong, but the biggest risk we have is a certain degree of fatigue," Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said on his second visit to the West African nation.

Ebola has killed more than 3,800 people in Liberia and nearly 9,200 across Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone since the first Ebola deaths in rural Guinea in December 2013.

All three countries have weak health systems that were ill-prepared for such an epidemic.

US, Taliban deny peace talks planned in Qatar
The US and the Taliban central spokesman on Thursday denied plans to hold peace talks in Qatar, contradicting earlier claims by militant leaders that contacts would resume in the Gulf state within weeks.

The denials came after multiple commanders said five former members of the Taliban supreme council would soon restart contacts with US officials in Qatar to try to get peace talks on track after more than 13 years of war in Afghanistan.

"The United States currently has no meetings with the Taliban scheduled in Doha," National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said.

The Taliban's central command also sought to distance itself from the announcement, saying its conditions for full-blown talks were a long way from being met.

"We do not have any plans for negotiations with anyone in Qatar. Regarding the negotiations, there is no new change in the policy of Islamic Emirates of Afghanistan," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement,

Some leaders trying to sabotage the party from within: Mamata
Amid speculation of growing chasm between her and the party's senior leader Mukul Roy, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee today alleged some leaders are trying to sabotage the party from within.

"Some (party leaders) are trying to sabotage. It will not be tolerated. Working against the interests of the party while remaining in the party will not be allowed," Banerjee was quoted by party insiders as telling a meeting.

"No need to think of who is coming in the party and who is leaving. You should work sincerely," she was quoted as saying by a TMC MLA who was present at the meeting and did not want to be named.

The party's base is strong and no one has the power to create a crack in it, the Chief Minister said in the meeting convened in the Assembly premises ahead of the budget session which began today with the Governor's address.

Using her regular pre-session meeting to send a message to party dissenters, she told the MLAs not to go to the media to air their personal grievances.

"Do not go to the media to air your personal views. If you have anything to say regarding legislative business, talk to Chief Whip Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay and Subrata Bakshi (the new additional general secretary) regarding party affairs," she said.

Modi's T-shirt gifted by Brett Lee receive low bids, suit hogs limelight
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pin-striped suit is hogging all the limelight at a Surat auction but the humble Cricket Australia T-shirt gifted to him by bowling great Brett Lee is getting the cold shoulder.

While a diamond trader from Bhavnagar has offered a staggering Rs 1.41 crore for the navy blue suit Modi wore during his meeting with the US President Barack Obama last month, the bids for Lee's T-shirt range between a measly Rs 1,500 and Rs 2,000.

"People are only looking for Modi suit. There is a T-shirt of Brett Lee gifted by Cricket Australia just beside the suit, but the bids for it are very low,' said a member of the organising committee.

"About 40 to 50 people have placed bids ranging from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 for the T-shirt that Brett Lee gifted Modiduring the latter's visit to Australia in November last year,' he said, showing the written bids of a handful of interested people.

A Surat-based diamond trader Mukesh Patel, who made a bid of Rs 1.39 crore for Modi's suit, said he is not interested in buying the yellow Cricket Australia T-shirt.

"I am not interested in buying the T-shirt. I want to purchase that historical suit only as it created a hype in the media. If I buy the T-shirt, I will be tempted to wear it. How can I wear it?' Patel said.

Sukhoi cannot replace Rafale: IAF chief
Indian Air Force chief Arup Raha today ruled out buying of more Russian SU-30s in place of French Rafale jets saying the two aircraft complement each other but do not replace the other.

Amid doubts creeping in that talks with Rafale would breakdown, Raha said that his force has no Plan B and was working on only Plan A.

Highlighting that his force has a number of legacy aircraft and their replacements are necessary, Raha said the Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) deal, for which Rafale has been shortlisted, needs to be inked in the "quickest possible time because drawdown is true".

Defence sources had said that India could buy more Sukhoi 40s in case the Rafale deal does not happen.

Two youths charged with girl's rape and murder in UP
In a grim reminder of the infamous Badaun incident, a teenage Dalit girl was raped and her body was later found hanging from a tree in Nighasan area of Lakhimpur in Uttar Pradesh, the police said today.

The body of the 16-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree on Tuesday morning near Taparpurwa village in the district, about 130 km from state capital Lucknow, they said.

Halwa ceremony as finance ministry staff gets quarantined for budget day
The Finance Ministry today organised the ritual 'halwa' ceremony which heralds the beginning of the quarantine for staff that will be associated with the preparation of the union budget document.

It has been a tradition which has continued for long.

As part of the ritual, 'halwa' is prepared in a big 'kadai' (vessel) and served to the entire staff in the ministry.

The significance of the sweet dish is that after it is served a large number of officials and support staff who are directly associated with the Budget making and printing process are required to stay in the ministry, cut off from their families. They are not even allowed to contact their near and dear ones on phone or any other form of communication, like email.

Only very senior officials in the Finance Ministry are permitted to go home.

Modi govt's reply to Deepak Parekh's 'impatience in India Inc' remark at 4 pm
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will reply to the charges made by HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh at 4 pm today in North Block. The government needs to go into damage control after Parekh's indictment of the Modi government, and Jaitley is believed to have discussed the matter with the Prime Minister in the morning and got the call for a presser approved.

Pitching for relaxing 'administrative controls' to improve ease of doing business, top industry leader Deepak Parekh has said that impatience has begun creeping in among businessmen as nothing has changed on ground in first nine months of the Narendra Modi government.

He said the industry is still optimistic about the changes it expects from the Modi government, but optimism is not translating into revenues and there has been little improvement on 'ease of doing business' front so far.

Parekh, who is known as a guiding voice of the Indian industry and has been on a number of key government panels on various policy and reform matters, further said that 'Make in India' can't succeed unless it is made easier for people to do business here and the decisions are fast-tracked.

Why do Teesta, husband need to be in custody for questioning, asks SC
Activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband, accused of embezzling funds, will not be arrested, says Supreme Court in interim order.

A new bench of the Supreme Court heard Thursday the plea of social activist Setalvad and her husband seeking anticipatory bail in a case of alleged embezzlement of funds for a museum in Ahmedabad's Gulbarg Society that was devastated in the 2002 riots.

No reasons were given for the change in the bench. The case has been shifted from the bench of justices S J Mukhopadhya and N V Ramana, which had granted protection from arrest to the couple for six days on February 13, to a bench comprising Justices Dipak Mishra and Adarsh Kumar Goel.

The court said that the Gujarat police will not arrest Teesta or her husband.

In it's interim order today, the court said, "It is a matter of curtailing someone's liberty.  Why do Teesta and her husband need to be in custody for questioning? Question is whether liberty can be put in ventilator or ICU."

Today's event was less chaotic with at least a 1000 people allowed to meet the CM and hand over petitions.

The event, which began early this morning, lasted for around three hours, and was held at the AAP office in Kaushambi in Ghaziabad.

Modi's Arunachal visit: Will this irk China?
Narendra Modi will be the first prime minister to attend Statehood Day of Arunachal Pradesh on February 20.

Modi will be in the state for just a couple of hours and will also use the opportunity to inaugurate the Arunachal Festival, flag-off the fully air-conditioned Arunachal-New Delhi Rajdhani Express and also inaugurate a comprehensive power transmission line project and the Itanagar water supply project.

PM's Arunachal visit comes at a time when he is scheduled to undertake his maiden official visit to China in May this year and five months after Chinese President Xi Jinping paid his maiden state visit to India.

The Chinese reaction to Modi's brief visit to Itanagar will be crucial as Beijing has reacted sharply each time whenever any Indian leader visits Arunachal Pradesh, the Indian state which China claims in entirety and describes as "southern Tibet', reports FirstPost

China accuses India of possessing some 90,000 sq km of "Chinese' territory, mostly in Arunachal Pradesh, a contention that has been disdainfully dismissed by Indian leadership for decades, cutting across the party lines.

We are at war with people who have perverted Islam: Obama
United States President Barack Obama has said the US and its allies are not at war with Islam but with people who have perverted the religion, asserting that groups like the Islamic State and Al Qaeda are desperate for legitimacy by portraying themselves as holy warriors in defense of religion.

"We are not at war with Islam. We are at war with people who have perverted Islam," Obama said at the White House Summit on 'Countering Violent Extremism', yesterday.

"ISIL and Al-Qaeda and groups like it are desperate for legitimacy. They try to portray themselves as religious leaders, holy warriors in defense of Islam.

"That's why the ISIL presumes to declare itself the Islamic State and they propagate the notion that America, and the West generally, are at war with Islam. That's how they recruit. That's how they try to radicalise young people," he said.

Obama said those outside Muslim communities need to reject the terrorist narrative that the West and Islam are in conflict or modern life and Islam are in conflict. We must never accept the premise that they put forward, because it is a lie, nor should we grant these terrorists the religious legitimacy that they seek. They are not religious leaders, they're terrorists," he said on the second day of the three-day conference, which is being attended by leaders from more than 60 countries including India.

AAP govt now talks of controlling Delhi traffic police
Who should control the Delhi police?

The four-day-old Aam Aadmi Party government has said it would try to bring traffic police under its ambit to improve the traffic situation in the national capital, NDTV reports.

"We will make efforts to bring the traffic police under the Delhi government's ambit," said Transport Minister Gopal Rai as saying. "I have called a meeting of senior traffic police officials on Friday, in which we will discuss ways of managing the traffic problem," he added.

Finding a solution to Delhi's traffic woes was among the government's priorities, PTI reported, quoting Rai. The move will help manage the city's traffic better. The minister also said it will also study good traffic systems and replicate these in Delhi so people don't have to face problems due to poor traffic management.

US govt maintaining secret ISIS kill list
The US is maintaining a list of about two dozen or so top ISIS operatives in Iraq and Syria it hopes to target in airstrikes according to a senior US official.

The list essentially amounts to a kill list, since the US has no troops on the ground in Iraq or Syria to capture ISIS suspects.

The number one target on the list is Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS.

One US official said Baghdadi is well aware the US is hunting him, so the belief is he is staying out of sight. It's been months since the last intelligence report about where Baghdadi is hiding, a senior US official tells CNN

The US believes Al Baghdadi knows warplanes are hunting him so he moves cautiously -- even as his influence has grown beyond Syria and Iraq.

The US has already killed a dozen or so ISIS operatives on the list including an ISIS chemical weapons expert the senior official says. But others are added to the list as intelligence is gained about their role in ISIS.

The official strongly emphasized that the command and control structure of ISIS remains murky and more intelligence is needed about the identity of top operatives.

Conservative Pavlopoulos elected Greek president
Pro-European conservative Prokopis Pavlopoulos won 233-30 votes to be named president on Wednesday, after receiving backing from the main center-right opposition party and the new left-wing government led by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

The 64-year-old's appointment to the largely ceremonial post ends a deadlock over the presidential selection that triggered snap general elections last month.

Pavlopoulos, a veteran politician and former law professor, was seen as a surprise choice, as conservative European Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos had been widely considered the favorite in the leadup to the vote.

Memorial to honor US woman held hostage by Islamic State
A plaza in this Arizona town will light up with candles Wednesday in memory of a hometown woman taken hostage by Islamic State militants.

Kayla Mueller's death was confirmed earlier this month by her family and the U.S. government.

The Islamic State group claimed she died in a Jordanian airstrike, but the Pentagon rejected that, saying it doesn't know how she was killed.

Local churches and community groups organised the candlelight memorial to reflect on Mueller's life and work as an international aid worker.

It will feature a song Mueller's mother used to sing to her as a child, "He Who Began a Good Work in You," and the choir from Tri-City Prep College High School, where Mueller graduated in 2007.
