Attacking Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, his mentor and JD-U leader Nitish Kumar today alleged that what he has done was not 'rebellion' but a 'fraud'.

"Manjhi ne jo kuch bhi kiya hai woh bagawat nahin balki dhokha hai (whatever Manjhi has done is not rebellion but a fraud)," Kumar said hitting hard on his protege.

Kumar reaction came a day after Manjhi attacked him saying actually he committed not a mistake but 'a great mistake' by assuming I would work like his puppet.

He said it was told to him (Manjhi) in clear-cut terms that a roadmap of the government was already in place and his task was to carry it forward. 

"But instead of carrying the roadmap ahead he started acting like an alternative government... this blew the very concept of 'sushashan' (good governance) and people started complaining us," Kumar said.

Danish police have said three officers were shot and wounded at blasphemy debate in Copenhagen where the French ambassador was speaking.

Two gunmen are said to be still at large.Reports say up to 40 shots were fired outside the venue in the Danish capital.

21:11   Pak violates ceasefire, fires mortar shells
India and Pakistan today traded accusations of violating ceasefire along the border area. Pakistani Rangers fired two to three mortar shells in Nowapind border outpost area along the International Border in R S Pura sector of the district tonight, BSF PRO S Yadav said.

The shells exploded at an isolated areas and did not caused any casualty or injury to anyone on this side, he said adding that the BSF did not retaliate. 

Meanwhile, Pakistan army today claimed that a 60-year-old civilian was killed today in alleged firing by Indian troops across the Line of Control. 60-year old Muhammad Aslam was killed in Polas village in Rawlakot sector this afternoon, Pakistan army said in a statement.

20:35   Vague laws biggest reason for pendency of cases: PM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that vague laws that lend themselves to different interpretations are the foremost reason for pendency of cases in courts.

"At the root of pendency of cases are laws that have 10 interpretations. There is shortage of quality manpower for drafting laws," he said while addressing the valedictory function of the sesquicentennial celebration of the Advocates Association of Western India

Seeking assistance of the legal professionals in drafting statutes, Modi said, "I have suggested that draft laws be posted online for legal opinion so that good and effective laws can be made with minimum of grey areas. 

That will effectively bring down pendency of cases in courts. In this, bar associations can be of great help."

20:08   Reform of UNSC should be through consensus, say Pak, China
With India seeking a permanent seat in a reformed UN Security Council, Pakistan and China have said any change in the 15-member body should be achieved through 'consensus'.

Pakistan and its all-weather ally also agreed on the need for maintaining strategic balance in South Asia, a statement issued by Pakistan's Foreign Office said after the conclusion of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's two-day visit yesterday.

"Both sides agreed on the need to make United Nations Security Council more representative and effective, and that its reform should be achieved by consensus," the statement said.

India has been pressing for a permanent seat in a reformed UN Security Council and during his recent India visit, US President Barack Obama had reaffirmed his support to New Delhi's bid in this regard.

Out of jail after a six-month prison term on drug charges, Hollywood action star Jackie Chan's son apologised to the public today for his "mistakes" and pleaded for a second chance, saying the punishment has changed his life and values.

Jaycee Chan, 32, said he had 'no reason, no excuse' for taking to drugs despite his father being a goodwill ambassador for China National Anti-Drug Committee in 2009.

"After this correction by the justice system, I have changed my outlook on life and my values," said Jaycee. "I want to apologise to everyone for my mistakes. I am genuinely sorry." Jaycee said his father did not intervene on his behalf and he received no special treatment in prison.

19:32   Modi 'persuaded' by the US to resume dialogue with Pak: Aziz
The US is behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi's reaching out to Pakistan yesterday with his decision to send Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar to Islamabad, according to Sartaj Aziz, the Pakistan prime minister's foreign affairs advisor.

Aziz believes that Modi was 'persuaded' by the US and others to resume the dialogue with Pakistan. "There may (also) be internal dynamics of Kashmir that have played some role," he is quoted as having told Rising Kashmir newspaper in an interview in Islamabad.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today carried out a major reshuffle in the party set-up, giving additional responsibilities to her close confidants and elevating former union minister Dinesh Trivedi to vice-president's post in an exercise that left her close aide Mukul Roy out in the cold.

"The Trinamool Congress has appointed Subrata Bakshi, a party MP, as additional all-India general secretary. He is a founder-member of the party," party secretary-general Partha Chatterjee told reporters after the meeting.

Mukul Roy, who has been made to share responsibility as all-India general secretary with Bakshi, a staunch Mamata loyalist, was conspicuous by his absence from the closed-door meeting convened at Mamata's residence to discuss the party's preparedness for the coming civic polls.

Chiding private telecom operators for repeated call drops on their network, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today said lack of spectrum is no excuse for not resolving this problem.

"When people come with complaint about call drop on private mobile operators network what should I tell them? Private telecom operators need to ponder on this call drop. All this is because lack of spectrum, I'm sorry. I don't buy this," he said at a telecom event organised by television channel NewsX.

Telephone subscribers have been complaining about frequent call drops. Operators have cited lack of spectrum and residents protesting installation of mobile towers as reasons for call drops. Telecom Minister Prasad said that 'there is need for better monitoring of entire system' to address the call drop problem.

17:56   India deeply concerned over Yemen situation, favours dialogue
India today said it was "deeply concerned" about worsening political and security situation in Yemen and asked all parties there to amicably resolve their differences through the process of dialogue and consultations.

It also asked the parties to fully abide by relevant UN resolutions, the terms of the Peace and National Partnership Agreement and the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference.

"India hopes that the ongoing UN-mediation efforts would assist the people of Yemen in finding a consensus-based solution to the current political impasse," the Spokesperson of the External Affairs Ministry.

As a longstanding friend of Yemen with close historical and people-to-people linkages, India has been extending all possible bilateral assistance to the country, he said.

The Spokesperson further said India remains committed to a stable, peaceful and democratic Yemen, which is in the interest of global peace and security.

17:51   Municipal corporation demolishes ramp outside SRK's bungalow
The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai today demolished a controversial ramp outside Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's famous bungalow 'Mannat', in suburban Bandra.

BJP MP Poonam Mahajan had sought removal of the ramp, following complaints by residents of the seafront area. "We have demolished the illegal ramp," said an MCGM official, adding that the action was taken after the 49-year-old actor failed respond to a notice asking him to remove it in seven days.

"The actor may even have to pay fine for not complying with the notice given last week," the official said. Mahajan, the local MP, had written to MCGM commissioner Sitaram Kunte on January 29 asking him to demolish the structure as residents complained about 'chaos and traffic build-up' which it caused.

17:12   Aadhaar to link with electoral rolls to remove bogus voters
The Election Commission would launch a drive from March 1 to link Aadhaar number with electoral rolls in a bid to weed out multiple voter cards and bogus voters and put in place an authentic database.

Chief Election Commissioner H S Brahma told reporters today that this 'Electoral Roll Purification and Authentication Drive' across all the 676 districts is proposed to be completed by August 15 this year.

The idea is to prepare 'a 100 per cent pucca' national electoral roll data, he said, after attending a workshop on Aadhaar linking with electoral rolls. 

The CEC appealed to people to upload their Aadhaar number on the National Voter Service Portal, launched on January 25 this year.

16:34   Parlimentary committee members inspect Kudankulam plant
Members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Undertaking today visited the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant and inspected the various safety measures.

The committee members, led by Chairman Shantha Kumar, held discussions with officials, including those from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited, KNPP officials said.

NPCL Chairman cum Managing Director K C Purohit was among those present. Discussions were also held about the progress made in the second (1000 MW) unit which is almost ready for trial run.

Some members inspected the development works, including the construction of a super speciality hospital and 1,000 houses for fishermen in the village.

They said Rs 500 crore had been alotted for development works in and around the plant.

16:16   Polio team ambushed in Pak's restive NW; driver killed
A driver of a polio team was today killed and a polio worker injured when militants ambushed them in Pakistan's troubled tribal region in the northwest ahead of a nationwide anti-polio drive, officials said. 

Unidentified gunmen attacked the vehicle carrying polio workers in Landi Kotal area of Khyber region near here. A security official from the area said militants had information about the polio team and they targeted the workers.

"Driver Ziarat Gul was killed and a polio worker injured," he said.

In pep talk to the team against the high-voltage game against Pakistan tomorrow, Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said, "There is of course more intensity when we play Pakistan because the game is followed by so many fans. But I see it as a good platform for the team to perform."

"We need to forget the past and try not to make the same mistakes. It's been a long summer but the positive thing is that we have got used to the conditions. The boys are looking good."

Dhoni played down repeated questions about India's impressive 5-0 record World Cup record against Pakistan, saying what mattered more was how the team played on the given day, reports AFP.

"All I know is that I am asked a lot of questions about the record," he said. "Look, I am not bothered about statistics because what happened in the past will count for little in what is a prized game for all."

After the inauguration, which was also attended by Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, the PM said, "India is fastest growing economy in world with GDP growth rate of 7.4 per cent."

The brutal police assault on a 57-year-old Indian man in Alabama that left him partially paralysed, has been described as "horrible and tragic" by influential US lawmakers who said there are reasons to be concerned over incidents against South Asians in the country.

"This week's incident in Alabama that left an Indian grandfather visiting his American family partially paralysed is horrible and tragic," said Congressman Ami Bera,

Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans. "I'm glad officials have acted quickly to respond and that the FBI has opened an investigation," said Bera, the only Indian American in the current Congress.

"Moving forward, we must come together as a nation to tackle the very real issues our minority communities face, and to rebuild trust and understanding among law enforcement agencies and the diverse communities that they serve,"he said.

Civic officials in Mumbai have begun demolishing an allegedly illegal ramp outside actor Shah Rukh Khan's bungalow, 'Mannat', in Mumbai.

Khan was served a notice by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation last week in which he was given a week's time to remove the structure.

The notice was served after the BMC received a complaint by BJP parliamentarian Poonam Mahajan who alleged "chaos and traffic build-up" due to the ramp.

Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohammed are free pending their retrial, scheduled for Feb 23. A third colleague, Peter Greste, was released two weeks ago and deported to his home country of Australia.

A moderate 5.9-magnitude earthquake jolted Taiwan early today morning, US seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The US Army has approved hormone therapy for gender "reassignment" for Chelsea Manning, the soldier convicted of leaking a trove of secret documents, in a first for the American military, officials said today. 

The move was "based on a medical assessment for the individual," a defense official told AFP. "It was the right decision to make," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

New York Times media columnist David Carr collapsed at the newspaper's office and died on Thursday, the paper reported. He was 58.

Muslim groups planned to take their demands for a federal hate-crime investigation of three young Muslims slain in North Carolina to the White House today.  

The groups said on social media that they would hold prayers in front of the White House on the Muslim Sabbath, hours after the FBI's North Carolina office said agents were launching an inquiry parallel to a police homicide investigation.

Gunmen claiming to be members of the Islamic State jihadist group have seized control of a state-run radio station in Libya's coastal city of Sirte, residents said today.

Jihadist websites also posted pictures showing armed men sitting in front of microphones in a broadcasting studio and brandishing Kalashnikov assault rifles.
