Japan's warnings to female tourists in India falls short
February 11, 2015  12:21
After a Japanese woman was gang raped by tour guides in Kolkata in January this year, Tokyo had warned tourists travelling to India 'to be careful and behave cautiously'.

Perhaps had the language in the notice, put up on the Japanese consulate's web site, been specific and warned of possible sexual assault, the Japanese tourist who was sexually assaulted by a man posing as a tour guide in Jaipur earlier this week, would have been alerted to the danger of travelling alone in India.

The warning on the consulate web site, in Japanese, only asks tourists to be careful about places with cheap hotels where people who say they are guides should not always be trusted. The notice also warns tourists of credit card fraud and pickpockets, reports Joanna Sugden in IndiaRealTime, the Wall Street Journal's blog.

A Japanese consulate official in Kolkata tells her that after the January rape incident, their government had warned tourists travelling in India, particularly in parts of Kolkata. 'There are some bad people who don't speak Japanese as well,' he tells Joanna when asked why tourists were not warned to be on the lookout for Indians who speak the language.
