18:12   Monica Dogra tells us what happens inside Mumbai's after-parties
"In a way, the reason why I decided to pack up my life in New York City and move to Mumbai, with no friends, no family, no job, no savings, and no plan, was the city's house party scene.

"On my third day of ever treading Mumbai soil, I ended up at the JW Marriott for the MTV Immies. I think it was the last one ever celebrated. I had nothing to wear, except a little hippie dress my sister bought me in Africa, and a pair of worn-out chappals. The VJ on duty wanted to take a testimony of me for TV asking about my "look'.

"I remember this cracking me up. I was so not a part of this world. I shook off my chappals and sang Wade in the Water (Ella Jenkins) while wading in the pool under a full moon with a new friend I had made. The rest of the party looked at our misbehaviour with disapproval but also a bit of intrigue. But it was when the clock struck 1.30am that the evening really came alive."  Read more

16:34   Tharoor's bill to amend Sec 377 not admitted in LS
India's LGBT rights movement suffered another major setback today afternoon when the Lok Sabha, India's lower house of parliament refused to admit Congress MP Shashi Tharoor's proposal for reading down Section 377 even for a discussion.

However, as soon as the speaker introduced the bill in the Parliament today for a voice vote on admission, some BJP MPs loudly protested saying "No".

The bill received a measly 24 'ayes' in comparison to the large 71 'noes' while seven voters 'abstained' from the process.

Shashi Tharoor clarified his position on why the Parliament should discuss the matter.

He quoted the Supreme Court's directive in its December 2013 ruling, that "a competent legislative authority" should take a call on Section 377. "What I am doing is following the directive of the Supreme Court", said Tharoor.

14:30   Dec 16 gang rape: Juvenile convict to walk free, says HC
The Delhi High Court hearing the plea of BJP leader Subramanian Swamy plea that the juvenile convict in the December 16, 2012, rape should not be released says that the juvenile (who is now 20-years old) will WALK FREE. The HC refuses to stay the release of the juvenile, which means he will walk free on Sunday.

The convict has spent the last two-and-a-half years inside a remand home as per the provisions in the Juvenile Justice Act.

Terming the juvenile convicted in the December 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape case as an 'animal', BJP leader Subramanian Swamy last week said it is dangerous to free such a convict and appealed to the courts to make certain provisions in the law to deal with such serious offences.

"The juvenile convict should be kept with wild animals for committing such heinous crime. It is dangerous to free such people. There are certain flaws in our law. The juvenile laws are applicable only for people committing crimes like stealing food or bicycle but this law is not applicable for such kind of heinous crimes. There is no provision in the law that if such juvenile accuse do not change in the three years, then what action needs to be taken," Swamy said.

"According to the report of Indian Intelligence bureau, the juvenile accuse has turned into a jihadi. So, the court should interfere and make certain provisions in the law regarding this. The government should move court and seek to arrest the juvenile accused under National Security Act," he added.

The victim's parents reiterated that the juvenile should remain in custody.  "If someone like him gets released, it clearly shows the helplessness of the government and the law of our country. We hope that the high court takes the decision in favour of the society because even the High Court knows the suffering of my daughter," her mother said.

"I have been reiterating that the juvenile shouldn't be released, he is not committed a fault, he has committed a crime," she added.

Meanwhile, father of the victim also hoped that High Court would not release the juvenile.

"What we feel is that he should not be released, it won't be good if he gets released. But whatever the decision of High Court be it would be for the betterment of society," he said.

"The HC also knows that that juveniles like him are involved in rapes of minor girls," he added.

14:06   LIVE! Effigies burnt, Dilwale posters torn, is Bajrang Dal's way of repaying 'intolerant' SRK
Bajrang Dal activists in Bihar protested the release of Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Dilwale today. Posters of the film were torn and cinema halls were forced to stop screening it, police said.Protests were seen in Forbesganj in Araria district and Vikram in Patna district with Bajrang Dal activists shouting slogans of 'Shah Rukh Khan murdabad' and burning his effigy. They said that Shah Rukh had hurt them by making statements on intolerance in the country.

However, a day ahead of the film's release the superstar said he does not believe there is intolerance in the country, clarifying that his earlier comments on the issue were misconstrued. The actor, who faced a strong backlash from right wing groups for his remarks on intolerance in November, said he was asked to speak about future generations and his advice to them was taken out of context.

"I do not think there is intolerance or not... the question that was asked, for which people pounced on me, was `what would you say to the future generation?' because I now fall under the seniority zone...50% of our population is 25 now. If I can give any advice to them, then it would be to not differentiate in the name of region, religion, caste, colour, creed, sex or gender," Shah Rukh said during a television show.

13:26   Madras HC's VERY important point on separate enclosures for sexually abused children
The Madras High Court has suggested to the state government to provide enclosures with screens or one-way mirrors in all trial courts so that child victims of sexual abuse do not get to see the accused while deposing in court.

Justice S Nagamuthu of the Court's Madurai Bench, who dismissed an appeal filed by a person sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment for abducting and raping a 11-year-old girl, pointed out that the Supreme Court and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, had also stressed on creating such an infrastructure to protect the children from intimidation.

The apex court had ordered that "a screen or such other arrangements may be made where the victim or witnesses do not see the body or the face of the accused."

It was also suggested that questions posed to the victim during cross examination, on behalf of the accused, should be given in writing to the presiding officer so that the judge could pose them to the child victim or witnesses in a language which was clear and not embarrassing. The child victim must be given sufficient breaks while testifying in the court.

12:48   Hema's family suspect Chintan's role in double murder
The family members of artist Hema Upadhyay, who was killed along with her lawyer last week, suspect the role of her estranged husband Chintan Upadhyaya in the double murder and want the police to probe it.

The deceased artist's cousin brother Deepak Prasad told mediapersons yesterday that he and his other family members "strongly suspect Chintan's role behind the conspiracy to kill Hema and her 65-year-old lawyer Harish Bhambhani".

Prasad also said that the motive, as cited, of the prime accused Vidhyadhar Rajbhar and his men to kill Hema and her lawyer for Rs 5 lakh was not true, as she had financially helped Vidhyadhar in the past and never asked him to return her money.

He also alleged that some years back, Chintan had threatened Hema that he would kill her and could go to any extent to do that.

Meanwhile, a senior police officer, who is probing the case, told PTI today that, "When a body is recovered and identified, police immediately take the statements of the deceased's relatives to get their version."

"In this case too, we had taken the statements of the deceased's relatives. Hema's relatives have accused Chintan of hatching the conspiracy to kill her," he said.

Based on the statements of Hema's relatives, Chintan was constantly grilled for four days by several police officers in connection with the twin murders, he said.

The deceased artist's husband still remains a "suspect" in the case, he said, adding the motive behind the murder is yet to become clear. However, without proper evidence, police cannot arrest anyone based on mere allegations, he further stated.

Only after the arrest of the Vidhyadhar, who is on the run, the police could get a clear picture about involvement of Chintan, if any, the officer said. He also said that Hema's relatives were trying to build pressure on the investigating team by approaching the media and expressing their views which they have already mentioned in the statements given to police.

Bodies of noted installation artist Hema (43) and her lawyer Harish Bhambhani wrapped in plastic and packed in separate cardboard boxes were found dumped in a drain in suburban Kandivali on December 12.

11:10   Kejriwal's fresh salvo, claims CBI told to target Opposition
The confrontation between Delhi's ruling AAP and the Centre today intensified with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal making fresh allegations that CBI has been asked to "target" the opposition and "finish those who don't fall in line".

Kejriwal's latest salvo came a day after he demanded that Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley be removed from the Cabinet for alleged corruption in Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) which he had headed for 14 years till 2013.

Jaitley had rejected the allegations calling it was a propaganda technique of Kejriwal to deflect attention when he himself was in the "dock". Kejriwal today tweeted, "A CBI officer told me yesterday that CBI has been asked to target all opposition parties and finish those who don't fall in line."

The AAP chief once again chose the social media route to level the charges. He had virtually live-tweeted the CBI raid at his Principal Secretary Rajendra Kumar's office in the Delhi Secretariat on Tuesday. Kejriwal had said Jaitley's assertion that AAP's allegations against him are "unsubstantiated and non-specific" could not be treated as "gospel truth" as the charges against him were "very, very serious".

Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the Nobel laureate who dedicated her life to helping the poorest of the poor, will be made a saint of the Roman Catholic Church in September 2016, an Italian Catholic newspaper reported.

Avvenire, the official newspaper of the Italian Catholic bishops conference, said on its website that Pope Francis had earlier on Thursday approved a decree recognising a miracle attributed to her intercession with God.

Mother Teresa, who died in 1997 at the age of 87, was beatified in 2003 by the late Pope John Paul. Beatification, which requires one miracle, is the last step before sainthood.

01:38   India building top-secret nuclear city: Foreign policy journal
A leading American foreign policy journal today alleged that India is building a top-secret nuclear city to produce thermos nuclear weapons which would upgrade the country as a nuclear power and unsettle its two major neighbours -- Pakistan and China.

Foreign Policy magazine alleged that India started building this secret city in Challakere in Karnataka, which when completed in 2017 would be "the subcontinent's largest military-run complex of nuclear centrifuges, atomic-research laboratories, and weapons- and aircraft-testing facilities".

"But another, more controversial ambition, according to retired Indian government officials and independent experts in London and Washington, is to give India an extra stockpile of enriched uranium fuel that could be used in new hydrogen bombs, also known as thermonuclear weapons, substantially increasing the explosive force of those in its existing nuclear arsenal," the investigative report said.
