Amit Shah becomes phone VIP
December 17, 2015  15:53
BJP president Amit Shah has been provided with an RAX four digit secret phone managed by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The phone has been installed at Shah's official residence at 11, Akbar Road. The RAX phone, which is not for public consumption, is meant solely for communication between Union ministers and the bureaucracy. The Union home ministry is the nodal agency to install and monitor the RAX phones, whose exchange is housed in the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

During the UPA regime, Sonia Gandhi also had an RAX phone as chairperson of the NAC. The Leader of Opposition is also given this facility.

But what is interesting is that Amit Shah's wife doesn't dare to enter the room where the RAX is kept. If it rings, it's meant for Amit Shah's sharp ears, and the BJP prez sprints to take the call, which is invariably from the PM.

During the the PM's foreign visits, the Union Home Ministry ensures that the RAX installed at South Block, is connected to the country Narendra Modi is visiting.

In fact, the PM can also use the RAX phone in his chamber inside the Air India One aircraft when he is travelling. The phone works at 40,000 ft above sea level, which is generally the cruising altitude.

So, the PM never misses out on any information be it from IB, RAW or from Army intelligence units as is being monitored by the PMO in South Block.
