22:35   British Library rejects Taliban archive
The British Library in London has declined to store a large collection of Taliban-related documents over concerns regarding breach of terrorism laws.

The collection, related to the Afghan Taliban, includes official newspapers, maps and radio broadcasts.

The British Library said it feared it could be in breach of counter-terrorism laws and had been legally advised not to make the material accessible.

"Although the archive was recognised as being of research value, it was judged that it contained some material which could contravene the Terrorism Act, and which would present restrictions on the Library's ability to provide access to the archive for researchers," a library spokesperson said.

Alex Strick van Linschoten, an author and researcher who helped spearhead the Afghan project, said it was "surprising and disappointing".

22:18   UK takes anti-ISIS fight to Twitter
The UK government has created a dedicated Twitter feed to counter the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist group that has seized swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria.

The @UKAgainstISIL account will provide "updates on the UK government's ongoing work to defeat ISIL".

Four posts have been made since it was set up yesterday, including a video explaining the role the UK is playing in the fight to defeat the terror group.

The footage says Britain is "militarily removing territory from ISIL" and "cutting off ISIL finances".

One of the posts read: "To protect Britons at home we have disrupted ISIL-linked terror plots, stopped people wanting to do harm from reaching the UK.

"Worked with the internet industry to remove extremist propaganda and arrested 203 people for Syria-related terror offences."

Islamic State, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), often uses social media to spread its views.

A US study earlier this year had claimed there were at least 46,000 Twitter accounts operating on behalf of IS.

British forces have been carrying out airstrikes against ISIS militants in Iraq, but no action in Syria has been approved by Parliament.

There is speculation that British Prime Minister David Cameron will push for a vote to extend the UK's involvement when Parliament returns from its summer break next month.

22:11   3D imagery to recreate monuments from IS
Experts from Oxford University in the UK and Harvard University in the US plan to take 3D photographs of every artefact under threat from the dreaded Islamic State militant group in an attempt to recreate them.

The initiative comes against a backdrop of widespread destruction by the terrorists of historical monuments, most recently the temples in the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria.

The latest plan will see archaeologists flooding the area under ISIL threat with cameras taking 3D images of every artefact under threat.

Should the artefacts be destroyed, the 3D imagery will be used to make exact replicas.

Oxford-based Institute for Digital Archaeology (IDA) will see thousands of cheap 3D cameras being sent to the areas most under threat, The Times reported.

"If ISIL is permitted to wipe the slate clean and rewrite the history of a region that defined global aesthetic and political sensibilities, we will collectively suffer a costly and irreversible defeat," said Roger Michel, IDA director.

21:55   Firepower up close: Witnessing a South Korean military drill
On the side of a hill in Pocheon, about 18 miles (30 kilometers) from the Demilitarized Zone that separates North and South Korea, targets are laid out.

They're huge painted numbers and drawings of tanks bearing the North Korean star emblem.

Through a megaphone, a soldier announces what target to watch. A South Korean F-16 fighter jet screams over shortly after, dropping a bomb right on the spot.

Next up we're treated to the impressive sight of an E-737 "Peace Eye," a state-of-the-art surveillance aircraft that can detect movement across most of North Korea's airspace from behind the South Korean border.

We'd been given rare access to a live-fire exercise involving armed forces from South Korea and the United States.

17:46   APJ Kalam Marg replaces Delhi's Aurangzeb Road
So, Mughal emperor Aurangzeb has been asked to leave Delhi.

One of Delhi's most elite addresses, Aurangzeb Road, will be renamed after former president APJ Abdul Kalam.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted the change saying, "Congrats. NDMC jst now decided to rename Aurangzeb Road to APJ Abdul Kalam Road."

The decision was taken by Delhi's civic body in consultation with the union home ministry.

As India bid farewell to its most-loved President, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on July 27, many states decided to name educational institutions after him. There had long been an online clamour to rename Delhi's posh Aurangzeb Road and so when Dr Kalam passed away, the campaign gained momentum.

BJP leader Mahesh Girri had raised the demand for renaming Aurangzeb Road after Kalam, in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this month.

Several other right-wing groups, and members from Sikh religious groups, have demanded Aurangzeb's name be erased once for all from Delhi roads. With the death of Dr Kalam, the campaigners resurfaced, seeking Aurangzeb Road to be renamed as A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Road.

Would the syncretic Dr Kalam been happy? Maybe not.

15:32   Sanjeev Khanna's custody: What happened in court today
The police said in the court that Sanjeev Khanna had played an active role in the conspiracy and murder of 24-year-old Sheena, daughter of Indrani, and he had to be taken to the spot where she was killed on April 24, 2012.

The police contended that Indrani, the wife of former STAR CEO Peter Mukherjea, her driver Shyam Rai and Khanna abducted Sheena in a car and took her to a forest in Pen town of Maharashtra's Raigad district where they killed her allegedly by strangulation. The trio then poured petrol on her body and burnt it in the forest, they said.

They further said they want to recover the object with which Sheena was killed and also the car in which she was abducted and taken to the forest in Pen.

The police said they have taken possession of Khanna's passport, laptop and mobile phone. Khanna was arrested under IPC sections 364 (kidnapping), 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) and 120-B (conspiracy).

Prosecutor Laxman Rathod sought Khanna's custody on the ground that he was allegedly involved in the criminal conspiracy and murder of Sheena. Hence, a detailed probe is required to be done, he said. He said the police need to find out if more persons were involved in the crime, apart from Indrani, her driver and Khanna.

15:19   Gujarat has started the process of disowning Modi
Being the very smart man that he is, Narendra Modi will be the first to recognise -- even if he does not acknowledge it publicly -- that August 25, 2015, is the day when Gujarat finally started the process of disowning him.

Future historians may even mark August 25 as the date when it all unravelled and the Modi political meltdown began. An over-statement? An exaggeration? A wishful fantasy?

Consider this: from March 2002 to August 24, 2015, nobody, and that means nobody, other than Narendra Modi had been able to collect a crowd of five lakh people in any part of Gujarat.

Meanwhile, tension eased across Gujarat as no incident of violence, sparked by Patel community's quota agitation, was reported overnight, while curfew was today lifted in three out of the nine areas of Ahmedabad even as Army continued flag march in some sensitive areas.

The situation in Gujarat, bearing the brunt of the agitation by Patel community seeking reservation under OBC category, is gradually returning to normal, officials said.

13:05   Court nod for home food, clothes, for Indrani
A local Mumbai court today allowed the application filed by lawyer of Indrani Mukherjea, accused in the murder case of her daughter Sheena Bora, seeking permission to meet her.

Indrani's lawyer had moved the court yesterday saying that police were not allowing her lawyers to meet her. The Bandra court, while allowing the application, directed the police to follow the guidelines framed by the apex court on the rights of the accused.

Mukerjea's lawyer Gunjan Mangala had told the court that when the lawyers went to meet her, the police denied the permission repeatedly. Indrani's lawyer had yesterday moved an application in the metropolitan magistrate's court in Bandra seeking home food, clothes and permission to meet her in custody.

The court later directed the prosecutor to file his reply in the application and adjourned it till today.

Indrani, the wife of former STAR CEO Peter Mukherjea, was arrested by Khar police on August 25 over her alleged role in the murder of Sheena Bora in 2012. She was later produced before the Bandra court, which remanded her in police custody till August 31.

12:43   Indrani's driver who squealed about Sheena's murder may turn approver
Details of the manner in which Sheena Bora was killed on April 24, 2012, have now been revealed by the Mumbai police after hours of interrogation of Indrani Mukerjea's driver,  Shyam Rai, Indrani and her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna.

What we know so far is this:

The day before the murder, on April 23, the three did a recce of the place where they would dump Sheena's body, which the police say indicates a premeditated murder and not a crime of passion.

The confessional statement of Indrani's driver Shyam Rai, led to Indrani's arrest, and now media reports say the driver may turn approver, which means he will give evidence against the other two accused and will get off with a lighter sentence if the charges stick.

The driver has allegedly told the police that Sanjeev Khanna strangled Sheena, after she had been sedated, possibly by an injection. The trio then put her body in a suitcase and kept it overnight in Peter and Indrani Mukerjea's garage in the Worli apartment.

They then took the suitcase with her body to Pen in Raigad district, smashed her face to prevent identification and dumped it down a slope.
The decomposing remains were found a month later by villagers. At the time, the police dismissed it as an unclaimed body.

12:25   Was Sheena pregnant when she was killed?
In yet another twist to the Sheena Bora murder case, The Times of India quoting online reports said close friends of the Mukerjea family claim that when she was killed, she may have been pregnant with the child of a man close to her mother Indrani Mukerjea.

According to the reports, the friends said the unidentified man had flown off to a south-east Asian country with Sheena on the pretext of a business trip.

Indrani allegedly stumbled upon the relationship when she found the flight's boarding pass. When asked, the man reportedly admitted that he had got intimate with Sheena, who he believed was her (Indrani's) sister.

Sheena, on her part, allegedly told Indrani that she was pregnant with the child of the man and that she would not just keep it but also "unaccounted" money in her name in a foreign bank.

04:01   NASA's dire sea rise warning
It was less than two years ago that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released its all-encompassing assessment on the current state of climate change research and made projections for the future climate of our planet.

According to the latest from NASA, however, the projections the panel made for a rise in global sea levels of 1 to 3 feet may already be outdated.

According to Steven Nerem of the University of Colorado, we are "locked into at least 3 feet of sea level rise, and probably more."

Nerem said experts now think a rise in sea levels toward "the higher end of that range is more likely, and the question remains how that range might have to shift upwards."

This is startling news if you are one of the 150 million people on Earth who live near the ocean. Even if you don't live close to the sea, you likely use goods that are manufactured in plants near the water, or vacation at the beach.

02:42   Science and religion fight over Hawaii's highest point
Rising more than 6 miles from the seabed floor, Mauna Kea is the tallest summit in the world.

To native Hawaiians, the dormant volcano is the most sacred land in the entire Pacific. It is the point where the sky and earth meet. They believe it is the site of the genesis of their people, and it is the burial ground for their most revered ancestors. Considered a temple and a house of worship, native Hawaiians believed the gods created Mauna Kea for them to ascend to the heavens.

To scientists, the mountaintop is the best location in the world to observe the stars and study the origins of our universe.

"The summit of Mauna Kea may, in fact, be the darkest site anywhere in the world ... which of course means you can see deeper into space," said Doug Simons, executive director at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. The CFHT sits with 12 other telescopes on top of the mountain.

Inspired by the images being captured from the summit, a group of astronomers wants to build the world's most sophisticated telescope at the top of Mauna Kea. It's called the Thirty Meter Telescope, or TMT for short, because the primary mirror of the telescope is 30 meters across. (In comparison, the famed Hubble telescope is 2.4 meters in diameter). The price for the TMT is $1.4 billion.

02:39   Astronomers uncover evidence of galaxy metamorphosis
From round disks to oval clusters; many galaxies in the Universe have undergone a dramatic transformation over the past eight billion years or so, researchers reported today.

An international team looked at data on some 10,000 of the billions of galaxies in the observable Universe today, and then used the Hubble and Herschel telescopes to peer back in time.

They found that 83 percent of stars formed since the Big Bang about 13.7 billion years ago, were initially grouped in flat, rotating, disc-shaped galaxies, according to a statement from the Cardiff University's School of Physics and Astronomy, whose astronomers led the study.

"However, only 49 percent of stars that exist in the Universe today are located in these disc-shaped galaxies, the remainder are located in oval-shaped galaxies," it said.

"The results suggest a massive transformation in which disc-shaped galaxies became oval-shaped galaxies."

The bulk of stars in the Universe are thought to have been formed between 12 billion to eight billion years ago.

02:17   US strikes southern Afghan district seized by Taliban
US forces have launched airstrikes on a district in southern Afghanistan seized by the Taliban the day before.

Afghan army Brig. Gen. Mohammad Rasool Zaizai says NATO and Afghan warplanes struck the army and police headquarters in the Musa Qala district in Helmand province Thursday, likely killing fighters and civilians.

He says it is not possible to confirm casualty figures because insurgents control the area.

Col. Brian Tribus, a spokesman for US forces in Afghanistan, says "US Forces conducted airstrikes in Musa Qala today against individuals threatening coalition and Afghan forces," without providing further details.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef says 30 civilians and 10 fighters were killed, but the Taliban often provide unreliable figures. Taliban insurgents overran Musa Qala on Wednesday after a weeklong assault on Afghan security forces.

01:43   Black hole might take you to another universe: Hawking
Celebrated physicist Stephen Hawking may have solved the 40-year-old information paradox - which continues to puzzle scientists - saying one could simply pop up in another universe after being sucked into a black hole, in a new theory about where lost information ends up.

"If you feel you are in a black hole, don't give up. There's a way out," Hawking, director of research at Cambridge University's department of applied mathematics and theoretical physics, said in a public lecture in Stockholm, Sweden.

He said he had discovered a mechanism "by which information is returned out of the black hole", a place where gravity compresses matter to a point where the usual laws of physics break down.

He was speaking at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, where the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics is hosting the Hawking Radiation Conference dedicated to examining the mystery of the "information paradox" a conundrum concerning what happens to things swallowed by black holes.

Information about the physical state of something disappearing into a black hole appears to be completely lost, but according to the way the universe works, this should be impossible. Even information falling into a black hole ought to end up somewhere, The Guardian reported.

01:08   Pakistan suicide bomber kills wife, kids during police raid
A suspected Taliban militant today blew himself up during a police raid in central Pakistan, killing his own wife and two children, police said.

The counterterrorism raid on the house in the town of Pir Mahal triggered a shootout after someone inside began lobbing hand grenades, police official Khalid Rashid said.

He said the raid was part of the investigation into the assassination of Punjab provincial home minister Shuja Khanzada, who was killed along with 17 others in an attack by two suicide bombers in his northwestern hometown earlier this month.

Habibur Rehman, the militant who died today, was a Pakistani Taliban member, Rashid said. He said the militant initially used his wife as a human shield, but then set off the explosives when he was surrounded.

He said police seized four suicide vests, assault rifles, hand grenades and a large quantity of explosives at the house.

01:03   When Hamid Gul offered India peace
Former head of Pakistans Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Gen. Hamid Gul, who died recently, has been described in the Indian media as a monster, the originator and perpetrator of terrorism against India. Yet, there is another side to his personality which needs to be disclosed, writes A A Verma in an op-ed piece for The Hindu.

In early 1988, Pakistan President, Gen. Zia-ul-Haq, expressed concern that the Pakistan Army, by consuming almost 48 per cent of the nations budget, was unfairly depriving citizens of funds which could raise their standards of living. He was particularly concerned about the expenditure on the operations in Siachen and was convinced that an agreement with India was possible to cut down on these expenses.

Gen. Zia was anxious for a meeting between the Intelligence Chiefs of the two countries to explore possibilities and approached the then Crown Prince Hassan of Jordan to speak to the Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and facilitate a move forward.

00:47   Virginia shootings about mental health, not gun problem: Donald Trump
Donald Trump said Thursday he is opposed to tightening gun laws in the US but is in favor of addressing mental health to prevent shootings, one day after a man shot two journalists on live television.

"This isn't a gun problem, this is a mental problem," Trump told CNN's Chris Cuomo on "New Day." "It's not a question of the laws, it's really the people."

Calling the gunman a "very sick man," Trump said mental illness is "a massive problem" in the U.S. He suggested more resources should be devoted to addressing mental health -- hoping to prevent shootings like the one in Virginia, which he called "really, very sad."

Trump did not offer specific solutions to addressing the mental health problem, but said there are '"so many things that can be done" and repeatedly said the Virginia shooter, who killed himself Wednesday after killing two others, should have been "institutionalised."

00:16   Saudi king to visit White House in September
Saudi King Salman will meet with President Barack Obama early next month during his first visit to the United States since acceding the throne, the White House said today.

"The president will host the king of Saudi Arabia at the White House on Friday, September 4th," Obama's spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters aboard Air Force One.

"The president and the king will discuss a range of issues and focus on ways to further strengthen the bilateral relationship, including counter-terrorism efforts," Earnest said, adding that regional matters such as the conflicts in Yemen and Syria were also on the agenda.

"This visit underscores the importance of the strategic partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia," Earnest said.

The monarch, who acceded to the throne following the death of his half-brother Abdullah in January, pulled out of a Gulf leaders' summit with Obama in May that had been intended to reassure countries concerned by Iran's growing influence in the region.
