The BBC reports: National police spokesman Lt Gen Prawut Thavornsiri told AFP news agency: "I can confirm it was a bomb, we can't tell which kind yet, we are checking."

The Independent report confirms what travel blogger Richard Barrow tweeted: Thai police have deactivated a second bomb after a large explosion hit Bangkok, while a third bomb has been found. Fears arise that more bombs have been planted around the city.

Photos posted online showed car windows smashed and debris littering the streets as the area was cordoned off by emergency services.

The explosion was on the Ratchaprasong intersection, which has been the centre of political demonstrations in recent years. Our correspondent says bomb attacks in Bangkok are extremely rare.
