23:22   US blacklists two Shebab leaders after UN bus attack
The United States blacklisted two top leaders of Somalia's Shebab today, a day after the Islamist group killed seven people, including four UN workers, in a huge bus bombing.

Ahmed Diriye, who took over as the militant group's leader in September 2014, and intelligence chief Mahad Karate, were both designated as terrorists by the State Department.

US officials said the group was behind several atrocities, including the 2013 Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi and the April 2 massacre at Garissa University in Kenya in which 148 people were killed.

Yesterday's attack on a UN staff bus in the northeastern Somali town of Garowe killed seven people including four staff working for the children's agency UNICEF. Four other UNICEF workers were in a serious condition.

Somalia's Al-Qaeda-affiliated Shebab insurgents claimed responsibility for the attack, branding the United Nations a "colonization force in Somalia."

22:55   Pope accepts resignation of US bishop, years after conviction
Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop Robert Finn, who remained on the job for years after becoming the highest-ranking US Catholic official convicted in connection with the church's long-running sex abuse scandal, the Vatican announced Tuesday.

Finn, who led the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, Missouri, was found guilty in 2012 of failure to report suspected child abuse.

The case was tried by a judge instead of by jury because prosecutors wanted to protect the young victims' anonymity.

Finn was convicted of one count but not a misdemeanor charge he'd also faced. He was put on two years' probation but was not forced to spend time in jail or pay a fine, according to the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. Two charges against his diocese were dropped.

22:15   Lakhvi acquitted in Afghan national's kidnapping case
In yet another relief for Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, a Pakistani court today acquitted the mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attack case in connection with the kidnapping of an Afghan national in 2009.

Islamabad District and Sessions Court acquitted 55-year-old Lakhvi in a case registered against him for allegedly kidnapping Anwar Khan six years ago.

Session Court Judge Tanveer Mir heard the case after a judicial magistrate had deferred the indictment of Lakhvi on April 5. Earlier, police had failed to produce him in court due to 'security reasons'

The Islamabad police had booked Lakhvi for the alleged kidnapping of the Afghan national after the Islamabad High Court had suspended his detention in the 2008 Mumbai attacks case on December 26, 2014.

During today's hearing, police lawyer Amir Nadeem Tabish presented his arguments, saying that Lakhvi had been directly implicated in the abduction case. He claimed that the plaintiff and the abducted person's brother were eyewitnesses in the kidnapping incident.

Nadeem requested the court to summon Lakhvi and indict him in the kidnapping.

Controversial Punjabi film Nanak Shah Fakir was today withdrawn from theaters worldwide by its producer following wide-spread resentment among the Sikh masses over its content.

16:26   Dissidents had no respect for institutions: AAP clarifies explusions
The AAP has hit back at expelled leaders Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav for attacking the National Disciplinary Committe, saying the dissidents had no respect for procedures and institutions.

The party also sought to defend its decision of sacking the dissidents, saying they had involved in acts, which were 'harmful' for the party.

AAP's national secretary Pankaj Gupta said the responses by Yadav, Bhushan and Anand Kumar, were analysed and examined by the NDC after which the party sacked them. The party too came out strongly in support of former journalist Ashish Khetan after Bhushan accused him of doing a 'planted' story that benefited a private firm.

"We gave them two days to respond to the notice and received responses from all, but Ajit Jha. We examined their response and found that the complaints, evidences were anti-party and harmful for the party. This is why they were sacked from the party," Gupta said.

16:13   CBDT to introduce two sets of I-T forms
The Centre is said to be working on a simpler income-tax return form for the aam aadmi.

Apart from that, the Central Board of Direct Taxes has devised a new strategy to unearth black money used in foreign travel, which was the reason behind its complicated but cancelled ITR that called for details of foreign travel.

But now realisation has sunk in that 95 per cent of assessees are not regular overseas fliers, and that they go abroad for tourism purposes or to visit relatives. What the CBDT is interested in is the traveller of the other kind.

So the plan is to have two sets of ITRs. One for those who have travelled abroad more than once a financial year, and the other, simpler form for those who have not travelled abroad. Of course, the latter will have to append copies of their passport in support of their no-travel claim.

The CBDT also plans to authorise tax-payers to submit a Saral IT form that is self-attested, in line with the Modi government's initiative for self-attestation.

Patil was the police bodyguard of Khan at the time of the accident. He had filed a complaint alleging the actor was in an inebriated condition when he rammed his Toyota Land Cruiser into a bakery in suburban Bandra on September 28, 2002 killing one person and injuring four others.

The Economic Times reports that former Prime Ministers Jawahar Lal Nehru and Indira Gandhi will be part of the government's attack on Congress, which has positioned itself as a pro-farmer party.

Nehru's speech at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Hirakud Dam over the Mahanadi in 1948 will be part of the attack on Congress. Senior ministers, who will be defending the bill in Parliament, have decided to go for the jugular, in this case both Nehru and Indira Gandhi's  track record on rehabilitation, and what they had to say about oustees of projects and big dams.

Nehru had exhorted oustees of the project to look at their suffering as forming part of the greater common good. "If you have to suffer, you should do so in the interest of the country," he had said in his speech.

10:24   Hit-and-run case: Judgment date for Salman Khan to be announced today
A Mumbai court, which is trying actor Salman Khan in connection with the 2002 hit-and-run case, is expected to announce the date of verdict on Tuesday.

The verdict date is being announced a day after the prosecution and defence concluded their arguments yesterday.

While Khan's lawyer has argued that the evidence of eyewitness Ravindra Patil should not be accepted because he passed away and was not available for cross-examination, the prosecution said ample opportunity had been given to the defence earlier for cross examining this witness.

Patil was the police bodyguard of Khan at the time of the accident. He had filed a complaint alleging the actor was in an inebriated condition when he rammed his Toyota Land Cruiser into a bakery in suburban Bandra on September 28, 2002 killing one person and injuring four others.

Meanwhile Sessions Court judge D W Deshpande has, on a plea of Salman Khan, issued contempt notices to inspector of Bandra police station for recreating the crime scene and to two city newspapers for publishing photographs of a police team recreating the same.

The Aam Aadmi Party national disciplinary committee on Monday night decided to expel Prashant Bhusan, Yogendra Yadav, Anand Kumar and Ajit Jha because of anti-party activities and violation of code of conduct.

Earlier in the day, (AAP) rebels Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav accused party chief Arvind Kejriwal of "gross violation" of its constitution and attacked two members of its disciplinary panel for allegedly doing a "planted" story and accepting donations from dubious firms.

Ajit Jha and Anand Kumar, the two other AAP leaders issued with show-cause notices, too, submitted their responses.

01:55   28 dead as raids on Yemen capital spark blasts
Saudi-led air strikes on a missile depot in Yemen's rebel-held capital today sparked explosions that left at least 28 people dead and nearly 300 wounded, flattening houses and shaking faraway neighbourhoods.

Many more people were feared to have been killed after two strikes hit the hilltop depot, leaving a trail of destruction in the Fajj Attan area of Sanaa which was covered in thick clouds of smoke.

A coalition of Sunni Arab nations led by Saudi Arabia launched the air campaign against the Huthi Shiite rebels last month, vowing to restore the authority of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, who fled to Riyadh as the militiamen advanced on his southern refuge of Aden.

Riyadh has accused Iran, the main Shiite power, of backing the rebels and fears a Tehran-friendly regime taking control of the country on its southern border.
