Just in: The Supreme Court has stayed for two months the hearing of appeals in the Gujarat High Court on the Naroda Patiya case involving ex-Minister Maya Kodnani.

The court heard the plea by some of the victims in the 2002 Naroda Patiya riots against the out-of-turn hearing of an appeal filed by former minister Maya Kodnani against her conviction in the case.

Kodnani, a minister in then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi's government and the Naroda area legislator in the state assembly, was sentenced to a life term on August 29, 2012, along with Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi and 29 others in connection with the riots.

Most of them have filed appeals. While these appeals are yet to be heard, a high court bench has since begun hearing Kodnani's plea.
