Para-athletics games fiasco: PCI chief Rajesh Tomar suspended
April 07, 2015  10:25
The Paralympic Committee of India has acted by suspending president Rajesh Tomar over lack of facilities at the National Para-Athletics championship where the athletes were put up.

The three-day National Para Athletic Championship has been labelled a national shame. The participants were forced to use filthy toilets which doubled up as bathrooms and dormitories with no beds.

There was a sheer lack of basic disabled friendly infrastructure in the National Para Athletics Championship that was held in 2015.

The venue too was an undersconstruction building at a village in Ghaziabad where rooms allotted to various national teams had no furniture at all.

Tomar had admitted that there was "goof-up" on the part of his officials but sought to lay the blame on the government which he said has not given any fund and refused to arrange for a proper venue to host the event.

"I had approached the ministry to provide their facility to host the event but Sports Authority of India refused saying that their venues are being used by abled-bodied athletes. I did not have a venue to host the event. So, I said yes when the Uttar Pradesh unit of the PCI offered to host the event," Tomar said.
