All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leader, Asaduddin Owaisi, known for his controversial comments, targeted Bollywood star Salman Khan on Sunday, saying he ran over people sleeping on the footpath in an inebriated condition and made his driver a scapegoat.

He was speaking at a public meeting on Sunday organised in Mumbai in the wake of the Bandra bypolls, where the AIMIM has also fielded a candidate.

He gave Salman's example while batting for an alcohol ban and said that when beef could be banned, so should alcohol.

On March 30, Salman had told the court that his driver was at the wheel and not him.

He has been charged with killing one person and injuring four others by ramming his vehicle into a bakery shop in suburban Bandra in the early hours of September 28, 2002.
