AP: 20 red sandalwood smugglers killed in encounter in Chittoor

The Andhra Pradesh police on Tuesday shot dead at least 20 red sandalwood smugglers in a major encounter in Chittoor district of the state, television reports said.

According to reports, the encounter is still on and many others have sustained serious injuries due to heavy exchange of gunfire from both sides.

Initial reports suggest that a group of heavily armed smugglers attacked the cops during a combing operation, which resulted in severe retaliation from the police personnel.
