Modi sipped hot water, while others drank wine, ate crisped Halibut

Contrary to rumors and some reports that the White House would acquiesce to the sensitivities of PM Narendra Modi (menu would be strictly vegetarian, no alcohol would be served) the White House did nothing of the sort. In fact, the entree was crisped halibut, washed down with red wine -- Shafer Chardonnay 'Red Shoulder' 2010, which is hardly vintage.

Modi, at the outset, put everyone at ease by saying that he didn't want to embarrass anybody by the fact that he was fasting and that they continue with their normal practice of having dinner while he sipped on his warm water. 

Protocol dictates, however, that there was a plate kept in front of him at the table.

MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said, "The conversation was extremely convivial and the discussions were largely a sort of 'getting to know each other' approach."
