Thousands in Hong Kong defy tear gas, riot cops with batons
September 29, 2014  07:54
Thousands of people remained on the streets of Hong Kong for another day of pro-democracy protests, defying tear gas and ignoring appeals to leave. Overnight, riot police advanced on crowds who ignored official warnings that the demonstrations were illegal. Several scuffles broke out between police in helmets, gas masks and riot gear, with demonstrators angered by the firing of tear gas, last used in Hong Kong in 2005.
Protesters are angry at Chinese government plans to vet candidates in Hong Kong's 2017 elections.
