23:58   WB Guv asks JU student delegation to maintain discipline
West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi today advised the agitating students of Jadavpur University (JU), of which he is the chancellor, to maintain discipline and restore its 'peaceful atmosphere' from Monday.

"A delegation of seven students of Jadavpur University met the chancellor. They put forth their grievances. The chancellor patiently listened to them and advised them to maintain discipline and restore peaceful atmosphere in the university from Monday (September 22)", a Rajbhavan official said.

JU students have been boycotting classes since Wednesday demanding Vice-chancellor Abhijit Chakrabarti's resignation after a police crackdown on them.

Thousands of students, including from Presidency and Calcutta universities and other educational institutions took to the streets of the city during the day in a show of solidarity demanding an impartial probe into the alleged police lathicharge on JU students and the VC's resignation.

The march started from the state-run Nandan, the cultural hub of the city but the students were stopped by police at Mayo Road near the heart of the city. Following this the delegation went to meet the governor.

The protesters raised slogans against the police, the VC and the Trinamool Congress government. The march caused a gridlock in the central business district of the city.

01:59   French jets strike ISIS in Iraq
French jets struck a suspected Islamic State target in Iraq for the first time on Friday, expanding a US-led military campaign against militants who have seized a third of the country and also control large parts of neighboring Syria.

President Francois Hollande said Rafale jets hit "a logistics depot of the terrorists" near the city of Mosul, which has been held by Islamic State for more than three months. It promised more operations in coming days.

The French military action, which follows US air strikes in northern Iraq and near the capital Baghdad, appeared to win qualified endorsement from Iraq's top Shi'ite leader Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani.

In a Friday sermon, delivered by one of his aides, the elderly cleric acknowledged Iraq needed foreign help but said Iraq must not become subservient to outside powers.

"Even if Iraq is in need of help from its brothers and friends in fighting black terrorism, maintaining the sovereignty and independence of its decisions is of the highest importance," Sistani's spokesman Sheikh Abdul Mehdi Karbala'i said.

01:51   Surfing in Hawaii with the first Hindu US congresswoman
The sun has yet to rise when Tulsi Gabbard pulls her car into a near-empty parking lot here on Oahus windy eastern shore, walks toward the water and unfurls a yoga mat on the beach.

As gently crashing waves break the morning stillness, the congresswoman stands straight and salutes the tip of the glowing sun as it rises into the clouds and flashes a light upon the water.

For 30 minutes, she mediates in silence, shifting yoga positions while the sun rises higher in the sky.

Washington is -- and certainly feels -- 4,000 miles away.

An hour later, Gabbard is geared up in a wet suit and rashguard, a surfboard under her arm, looking out over the surf near Waikiki.

01:48   CIA halts spying in Europe
The CIA has curbed spying on friendly governments in Western Europe in response to the furor over a German caught selling secrets to the United States and the Edward Snowden revelations of classified information held by the National Security Agency, according to current and former US officials.

The pause in decades of espionage, which remains partially in effect, was designed to give CIA officers time to examine whether they were being careful enough and to evaluate whether spying on allies is worth running the risk of discovery, said a US official who has been briefed on the situation.

Under the stand-down order, case officers in Europe largely have been forbidden from undertaking "unilateral operations" such as meeting with sources they have recruited within allied governments. Such clandestine meetings are the bedrock of spying.

CIA officers are still allowed to meet with their counterparts in the host country's intelligence service, conduct joint operations with host country services and conduct operations with the approval of the host government. Recently, unilateral operations targeting third country nationals -- Russians in France, for example -- were restarted. But most meetings with sources who are host nationals remain on hold, as do new recruitments.

01:34   Bomb attacks kill at least 31 people in Iraq
A series of vehicle bombings in Iraq killed at least 31 people today, officials said, in the second straight day of attacks in Baghdad blamed on Islamic militants who have seized large parts of the country.

A parked explosives-packed car detonated shortly before midday prayers near the al-Mubarak mosque in the Iraqi capital's mostly Shiite central district of Karradah, killing nine people and wounding 18 others, police said.

Cars later exploded in two outdoor markets, one in the Shiite suburb of Nahrawan and the other in the Shiite district of Bayaa. Those attacks together killed nine people and wounded 23, according to police.

Just south of Baghdad, yet another car bomb went off in a parking lot in the town of Mahmoudiyah, killing three and wounding 10, police said.

Medical officials confirmed the casualty tolls. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief the media.

While most of the attacks happened in the Iraqi capital, the day's deadliest occurred in the northern city of Kirkuk, when a motorcycle bomb went off near a gun shop, killing 10 people and wounding 14, said provincial police chief Brig Gen Jamal Tahir Bakir.

Today's attacks came a day after a series of deadly attacks in mainly Shiite areas in and around Baghdad that left dozens dead.

The Naxal-hit constituency in Kanker district saw a direct fight between BJP's Bhojraj Naag and Rupdhar Pudo of Ambedkarite Party of India. The Congress candidate had withdrawn from the contest at the last minute, leaving the main Opposition party red faced.

All preparations have been done at the Bhanupratap Dev PG College in Kanker where counting will start at 8 am amid tight security, an election official said.

The entire exercise will be completed in 15 rounds and it will be video-graphed, he said.

A healthy 58.73 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the bypoll necessitated by the resignation of sitting BJP legislator Vikram Usendi after he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kanker.
