20:54   Iraq's Falluja hospital 'hit by shelling'
A hospital in the Iraqi city of Falluja, mainly controlled by Islamic State fighters, has been hit by government shelling. A member of staff was seriously injured in the shelling, medical officials at the hospital said. Many residents of Falluja and Ramadi have said they are more at risk from army air raids than from the jihadists.

20:09   ISIS earning millions through sale of oil and extortion
Islamic State militants, who once relied on wealthy Persian Gulf donors for money, have become a self-sustaining financial juggernaut. According to US intelligence inputs, the terrorist group is earning more than $3 million a day from oil smuggling, human trafficking, theft and extortion   The extremist group's resources exceed that "of any other terrorist group in history," said a US intelligence official. The Islamic State group has taken over large sections of Syria and Iraq, and controls as many as 11 oil fields in both countries, analysts say. It is also earning hundreds of millions of dollars from smuggling antiquities out of Iraq to be sold in Turkey. Other revenue comes from extortion payments, ransom from kidnapped hostages, and outright theft of all manner of materials from the towns the Islamic State group has seized, analysts say.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be turning 64 on September 17. However, instead of grand celebrations and parties, the PM has asked all his well-wishers and followers to instead focus and help the people affected by the Kashmir floods. In a series of tweets, Modi wrote, "I am hearing from different places that friends and well-wishers are planning various programmes and events for my birthday. My humble request is not to celebrate my birthday. Instead, dedicate yourselves towards relief work in J&K through your time and resources. The need of the hour is to stand shoulder to shoulder with our sisters and brothers of Jammu and Kashmir."

18:15   Punjabi Taliban to bid farewell to arms in Pakistan
The Punjabi Taliban terrorist group announced that it was giving up its armed struggle in Pakistan, and would now pursue the implementation of Sharia in the country through peaceful means. In a newly released video message and a written statement, Punjabi Taliban chief Ismatullah Muawiya said that the outfit was ending its armed struggle within the country, limiting its use of force to "infidel forces". Muawiya said they are abandoning the armed struggle to start preaching and do welfare work in the country, especially in the flood-hit areas.

17:22   Cameron condemns British aid worker's murder
The "murder of David Haines will not lead Britain to shirk our responsibility" to work with allies to take on ISIS, British Prime Minister David Cameron said Sunday. He vowed to work with the United States to support its "direct military action," but also emphasized that "this is not about British troops on the ground." Leading Muslim groups in Britain also slammed the terror group, calling them the Un-Islamic State.

16:37   David Cameron chairs security meeting
David Cameron, Britian's prime minister convened a session with ministers and security chiefs to formulate a response to the latest Islamic State atrocity. The meeting comes after Islamic extremists released a video showing the beheading of British aid worker David Haines and threatening another with death. Some British lawmakers called for Britain to launch air strikes against Islamic State forces after the killing.

15:14   Subramanian Swamy suggests President's rule in J&K
Bharatiya Janata Party senior leader Subramanian Swamy on Sunday suggested that President's rule should be imposed in the state for a year. Swamy said that for one year Jammu and Kashmir should be under President's rule and the elections should be held later. 

However, Swamy soon faced flak for endorsing President's rule in the state. 
Gaurav Bhatia from the Samajwadi Party said, "His statement is ill-timed. Priority should be to maintain normalcy in J&K."

Bhim Singh of the National Panthers party said, "What Subramanian Swamy stinks of old BJP power games. BJP has mission 44; here their mission should be to save J&K people."

14:25   Family dispute turns violent
A policeman was killed during a clash between supporters of Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh and his son Anant Vikram Singh in Amethi.   The royal family of Amethi has been embroiled in a family dispute over the palace with Sanjay trying to evict his first wife Garima Singh and their three children from the palace.

13:55   BJP MP sparks controversy over Madrassas comment
A fresh controversy has erupted in Uttar Pradesh after a Bharatiya Janata Party leader reportedly issued a hate speech in which he linked madrassas to terrorism. Swami Sakshiji Maharaj, a sitting Lok Sabha MP from Unnao consitituency in Uttar Pradesh, has reportedly labelled the madarsas as a hub of terror and that 'love jihad' prospers through such institutions. Maharaj allegedly said, "These madrassas need to come under government control and a probe should be initiated into their activities." He added that the madarsas are being run by the help of funds channelled from the Middle East.

13:22   Former aviation minister slams NDA govt after power supply is cut off
Hours after power and water supply was cut off to former aviation minister Ajit Singh's home at Tughlaq Road in New Delhi, Singh alleged the National Democratic Alliance government was targeting him and being unfair. He alleged that the NDA was indulging in vendetta politics.
On Saturday, the authorities snapped power and water supplies to his Tughlaq Road bungalow after he refused to vacate the accommodation allotted by the government. The bungalow has now been allotted to Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal who is living at a private guest house because of Singh's refusal. Singh is one of the four former United Progressive Alliance ministers who have not vacated their bungalows despite repeated eviction notices. The Rashtriya Lok Dal leader was served the eviction notice in July.

12:42   Pinki Pramanik speaks of pain after rape charges are dropped against her
Relieved at the high court's order to drop rape charges against her, Asian Games gold medallist Pinki Pramanik sought justice and said the complainant should be punished for tarnishing her image. "Now that I've been proved innocent I want to know what punishment should be given to the woman who dragged me into all this," said Pinki. The former middle distance runner was accused by her live-in partner Anamika Acharya of being a male and raping her, leading to Pinki's arrest on June 14, 2012. "It was really humiliating to go from one hospital to another for the (sex determination) test with all media attention. It has tarnished my reputation. Many a time, people would taunt at me. But all the way, I had firm belief on the law and ignored what people said. I knew I was innocent. The day has finally come. The judgment is a reply to all those who had pointed fingers at me," she said.

Left-backed All India Students Association swept Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union elections winning all four posts on Sunday. More than 54 per cent students exercised their franchise in the students' union polls of JNU, where women's safety and hostel facilities surfaced as the key issues. Last year too, AISA had swept JNUSU elections, winning all top four positions.

If reports are to be believed, American reality TV star Kim Kardashian is being wooed to come on the season 8 of Bigg Boss to add oomph factor. It is said that Kim might arrive at the end of October and participate in the reality show, and then embark on an India tour visiting iconic tourist destinations.
If the deal with Kim works out, one has to wonder what will happen, as the reality star had once revealed on her own show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, that she finds Indian food disgusting.

11:55   Rowan 'Mr Bean' Atkinson suffers head-on collision in car race
Comedian Rowan Atkinson crashed out of a classic car race at Goodwood after a head-on collision with a fellow motorist. The 59-year-old careered his blue Ford Falcon Sprint into the front of another car during the Shelby Cup, a one-off race which marks 60 years of the small-block V8 engine. The carnage began when a fellow competitor, who was driving two in front of Atkinson, lost control of their car and spun off the tracks. The actor, best known for his role as Mr Bean, did not sustain any injuries.

11:14   Protesting lack of pay, man lays down in front of Bihar CM's car
To protest against the alleged non-payment of salary for 14 months, a man lay down in front of Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi's cavalcade as it was about to leave the collectorate in Bhagalpur. The man, identified by police officials as Shyam Sundar Das, a driver in  Bhagalpur commissioner's office, was protesting against non-payment of salary for the last 14 months, and demanded it to be paid immediately. "I have not my got salary for 14 months. How will my family survive? We will die of hunger," the man yelled. Security personnel jumped out and caught hold of Das, who apparently wanted to meet Manjhi to apprise him of his plight.

10:48   ISIS video depicts beheading of British aid worker
British aid worker David Haines has been executed by ISIS militants, according to a video posted Saturday to a website associated with the group, making him the third Western captive to be killed by the Islamist extremist group in recent weeks. The ISIS video post showing Haines' beheading called his execution "a message to the allies of America". The act was condemned by US President Barack Obama, who called the act 'barbaric' whereas British PM David Cameron called it an 'act of pure evil'.

00:40   Barbs traded amid sporadic violence in Ukraine
Tensions over Ukraine grew again early today after Kiev accused the Kremlin of seeking to "eliminate' the pro-Western former Soviet nation while Moscow charged Washington with orchestrating the entire crisis.

The bitter exchange in the wake of the toughest Western sanctions yet on Russia came with a fragile nine-day-old truce once again tested by an hours-long battle for control of a strategic eastern Ukrainian airport.

Russia further stoked tensions by sending a 220-truck convoy into rebel-held territory which it said carried aid but which was never checked by European monitors or Ukrainian soldiers at the border.

00:29   Pak dockyard attackers wanted to hijack navy frigate
The Taliban militants who attacked Karachi's naval dockyard over the weekend wanted to hijack a Pakistani navy missile frigate, media reports said, even as at least 17 navy personnel have been detained for their alleged involvement in the assault. 

All the 17 detained persons are either serving or former navy personnel, according to reports in local media. "The investigators and security personnel have been able to extract plenty of important information from the four attackers who were captured during the attack that took place last Saturday," an official said.

President Barack Obama is distinguishing the military campaign against Islamic State militants from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He says the new fight must avoid what he calls mistakes of the past. 

Obama says more nations are joining a coalition against the extremists. In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama says, "This can't be America's fight alone."

00:21   Families of beheaded US reporters warned not to pay ransoms
The families of two journalists beheaded by Islamic State jihadists were both warned by US government officials they could face prosecution if they raised a ransom for their release. The recent executions of James Foley and Steven Sotloff by Islamic State (IS) extremists triggered worldwide revulsion and Washington has since declared it is at war with the radicals. 

The United States has a policy of never paying ransoms, contending that doing so would endanger Americans all over the world.

00:19   Major fire at a mine in Chandrapur; over 70 miners rescued
A major fire broke out at Sinhala Mines in Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL) here this morning and around 70 miners trapped inside were rescued by firefighters, a senior official said. "The fire broke out at the 14th level of the 5th rise in Sinhala coal mine this morning when the miners were on duty," Chief General Manager of WCL Chandrapur area, R K Mishra, said.

00:18   Sierra Leone requests funds for Ebola evacuation
Sierra Leone has requested funds from the World Health Organisation to evacuate a doctor sick with the deadly Ebola disease. 

The UN health organisation did not agree to the request, saying that instead it will work to give "the best care possible" to the doctor in Sierra Leone, including access to experimental drugs.
