BJP likely to be asked to form government in Delhi

NDTV reports: The ruling BJP is likely to be asked to form government in Delhi, which has been under President's rule since February.

Lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung has sought President Pranab Mukherjee's permission to invite the single largest party.

The BJP, with 29 legislators, is the single largest party after the Delhi assembly polls in December threw up a fractured verdict with no party crossing the finishing line. Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party, which placed second, took power with help from the Congress, which was reduced to just eight seats after 15 years in power.

But Kejriwal resigned on February 14 after 49 days in power, after failing to push his pet anti-corruption Jan Lokpal Bill.

The President is believed to have forwarded the Lieutenant Governor's recommendation to the Union Home Ministry. The report said BJP should be allowed to prove its majority on the floor of the assembly.

Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyaya told NDTV cautiously, "We have to analyse if we are in a position to form government."
