Pakistani protesters wielding sticks and throwing stones clashed with police in the centre of the capital Islamabad on Monday after weeks of demonstrations demanding Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's resignation turned violent.

Protesters broke through the gates of the Pakistan Secretariat, which has a number of ministerial offices, television reports said.

Despite heavy rain, crowds of protesters then tried to break through police lines to push their way to the prime minister's residence.

Police responded by firing teargas.

Announcements from loud speakers also warned the police against using force against protesters.

Troops stationed at the Prime Minister's house are on alert. Rangers are also stationed in the area.

The protesters, after noting the presence of troops, have halted their current movement. They are now pitching tents there and have surrounded the area.
