PM Modi had tweeted his tribute in the morning, saying, "I join my fellow countrymen & women in remembering former PM Smt. Indira Gandhi on her Punya Tithi (death anniversary)."

However, not a single leader of the Narendra Modi govt visited her memorial -- Shakti Sthal -- in New Delhi.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Vice President Rahul Gandhi and other senior party leaders -- former PM Manmohan Singh, Motilal Vora, M Veerappa Moily, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Ahmed Patel, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Digvijay Singh and Shakeel Ahmad paid tributes to Indira Gandhi, apart from the President and the vice president.

Devotional songs were played at the venue and her speech was played on the occasion.

Congress leaders say it is the first time that Indira Gandhi's death anniversary was marked without any state patronage.
