UN warns Iraq rise in executions fuels sectarian conflict

The UN voiced alarm today over theincreasing use of the death penalty in Iraq in the decadesince its reintroduction, warning such punishments would onlyfuel deadly sectarian conflict.
In a report released today, the United Nations office inIraq said the increase culminated with the execution of 177individuals in 2013, including up to 34 in a single day.
