You can retain your mobile phone number while shifting cities '" say from Delhi to Mumbai or Chennai to Kolkata -- from April next year with national mobile number portability all set to get a go-ahead.

The Telecom Commission, the highest decision-making body on telecom matters, accepted regulator Trai's recommendations on the subject and a final rollout is accepted by the end of March next year, a source said.

The matter now needs an approval by telecom and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. At present, you have to pay roaming charges if you use your number outside your home city.

Also, you will be billed on STD rates for the calls. A full MNP will help you do away with these charges as your new city becomes your home base without any change in the phone number. Read more
