Five Indian fishermen on death row to be released by Lanka

Sri Lanka has released five Indian fishermen facing the death penalty, TV reports say. Sri Lanka president Mahinda Rajapaksa is believed to have commuted the sentence.

India had filed an appeal in the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka against a verdict of its High Court awarding the death sentence to the five Indian fishermen given the death rap for alleged drug smuggling.

Emerson, P Augustus, R Wilson, K Prasath and J Langlet, all hailing from Tamil Nadu, were apprehended in 2011 and were sentenced to death by the Colombo High Court on October 30.
