Following the deaths of eight women and the hospitalisation of 52 others after a botched sterilisation at a state-run camp in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur district, calls for the chief minister's resignation have grown louder. Locals are demanding that Raman Singh be held responsible for the tragedy and that he should quit on moral grounds. Meanwhile, the Congress has called for a statewide bandh to protest against the state government.

Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken to CM Singh and had asked that a thorough probe be carried out and that the responsible parties are held accountable.
