"It's a sad day,'" said Somnath Chatterjee while analysing the results of the Lok Sabha elections on Friday.

"With the BJP at the helm at the Centre and the Trinamool in Bengal, an old man like me can only feel concerned. Are we heading towards a regressive society?" Chatterjee said as Rediff.com's Indrani Roy caught up with the former Lok Sabha Speaker at his South Kolkata residence.

Dissecting the Left parties' rout in Bengal, he said, "The Left parties are suffering from a crisis in leadership. No Left leader has his ear to the ground."

He just acts like a distant speech-giving machine with no understanding of the public pulse. "And then there are some who are old and weak and are not left with any vitality to fight against an Opposition," he said.

The Left was decimated in Bengal today. Here are the results:
TMC: 34, Cong: 4, Left: 2, BJP: 2.
