British travellers in India have been warned against possible poll-related violence in the country and asked to "remain vigilant' on results day May 16.

"You should remain vigilant in the run up to the elections, during the election period and on 16th May, the day the election results are announced. Avoid political rallies and large crowds and monitor the national and local media," says the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) travel advisory for India.

The advisory, which is regularly updated, highlighted that over 800,000 British nationals visit India every year and most visits are trouble-free.
