The Supreme Court has ordered a CBI-probe plea in the Saradha scam. Hundreds of thousands of people in Bengal, Orissa, Tripura, Jharkhand and Assam have lost crores of rupees in the money marketing scam in April last year.

Saradha, based in Kolkata, was headed by Sudipta Sen who is now in jail.

The scandal has been repeatedly referenced by Narendra Modi to target Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Several leaders of her Trinamool party have been accused of benefiting financially from the scam.

The Trinamool had opposed a CBI investigation, arguing that its own police were inquiring into it. The Supreme Court's verdict comes just before the last round of polling in Bengal on Monday, when the nine-phase national election ends.
