High velocity winds with a speed of 100 kmph accompanied by light showers changed weather for the better as mercury took a plunge of 14.5 degree Celsius in the national capital.

4.8 mm rain was recorded between 5:30 to 8:30 PM along with thunderstorms, according to the meteorological department. Wind gauge measured wind speeds up to 100 km/hour.

The maximum temperature during the day was registered at 39.5 deg C. However, after the showers, mercury settled at 25 deg C at 8:30 PM.

Weatherman termed the rainfall as a normal phenomenon for this part of the year.

"This is normal rain. In May, we get to see such thunder showers, which is normal phenomenon. Before the pre-monsoon season, which takes place after May, such rain happens.

"We can call it as a local development in weather as for the last few days, mercury has been rising following which we have to witness rain today," said a senior MeT official.

Earlier, mercury almost touched 40 degree Celsius during the day.
