LIVE! SC unshackles CBI, grants power to probe graft without govt nod
May 06, 2014  12:13
In a historic verdict, the Supreme Court today ruled that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will not need permission from the government to conduct an inquiry in corruption cases against senior bureaucrats.

A constitutional bench of the apex court upheld the primacy of Article 14 of the Constitution - equality before law to bring senior bureaucrats Jt Secretary and above at par with the other citizens.

The SC says that the status of top bureaucrats is of no relevance in the offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Protection of prior approval for probing graft charges against officers at level of joint secretary and above has propensity of shielding corrupt, the SC says.

SC lawyer and AAP member Prashant Bhushan says it's a historic decision.
