Caste politics ensures Jaswant denied Barmer seat

Singh, 75, wanted to contest the election from Barmer and had reportedly told the BJP top brass that it would be his last election from the constituency where he was born. He had also said that if he was denied the seat, he would contest as an independent candidate.

Col (Retd.) Sona Ram Choudhary who will now contest from Barmer, had defected to the BJP from the Congress earlier this week.

In fact, Jaswant Singh's son, Manavendra, had defeated Choudhary in the 2004 elections.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje is believed to have weighed in on the decision to field the former army man, on the premise that Choudhary was a Jat and would be a big draw in Barmer.
