Crimea's parliament declares independence

FT reportsThe crisis in Crimea escalated on Monday as the region's parliament declared the Black Sea peninsula an "independent sovereign state' and asking to be incorporated into the Russian Federation.

The announcement came hours after the region's election commission confirmed that 96.7 per cent of participants in a referendum voted to break away from Ukraine and as EU foreign ministers met to finalise sanctions on individuals linked to the crisis.
