March 14, 2014  12:44
Three people have been convicted and three acquitted for gang-raping a nun in Kandhamal, Orissa in 2008.

The nun was allegedly gang-raped on August 25, 2008 at Baliguda in Odisha's Kandhamal district, two days after communal riots broke out in the area following the killing of VHP leader Swami Laxmananda Saraswati and his four supporters.

Ten people were accused in the case and nine were arrested while one is still absconding. Eight of the nine people arrested were out on bail and one person is still lodged in jail.

The case was transferred to the district and sessions judge court in Cuttack in 2010 on directions of the Odisha high court after the alleged survivor had expressed apprehensions over fair trial and threat to her life if it was held in Kandhamal.
