LIVE! 6.9 quake hits northern California, no threat of tsunami

Just in: A 6.9 magnitude earthquake shakes the coast of Northern California. US Geological Survey says the epicenter was 50 miles west of Eureka. There is not believed to be any threat of a tsunami, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The quake struck late last night at 0518 GMT with an epicenter located 77 kilometers west-northwest of the town of Ferndale and at a depth of seven kilometers, said the USGS, which monitors earthquakes worldwide.
