Encounter on in Kupwara; 1 terrorist killed

One terrorist has been killed and an army officer wounded in an ongoing fierce encounter in north Kashmir's Kupwara district, reports Rediff.com's Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar.

A senior police officer said troops of counter insurgency, Rashtriya Rifles and special operations group of the state police jointly surrounded Malikpora Vilgam village near Handwara in Kupwara district early Monday morning on specific information about presence of a group of Lashkar-e-Tayiba terrorists there.

"The holed up terrorists were challenged following which they opened fire at the security forces. So far one terrorist has been killed while an Army Major was injured,' the officer said.
