The debris spotted by a search-and-rescue plane near Vietnam's Tho Chu island do not belong to the missing airliner, Malaysian authorities have said.

They added that investigators are looking into the possibility that the missing flight could have been hijacked.

A Vietnamese plane has reported spotting parts of debris of an aircraft, suspected to be the Malaysian airliner that went missing on Saturday.

A search-and-rescue plane spotted fragments of the missing flight 50 miles south of Tho Chu island in the South China Sea, the Vietnam government said on Monday morning.

Flight MH370, carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members, had vanished on Saturday morning while on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, triggering a multinational hunt for the plane and its passengers.
