Voters to Rahul: 'If India is rich, why are we still so poor?'

Another autorickshaw puller asked Gandhi, "I want to know why, when I hear so much about India being such a major power, a great economy, a prosperous country, why am I still so poor. Is it because my government is not with me?"

Yet another member of the audience recited a poem he had written for the Congress leader.

Gandhi also heard in length about how the system of issuing ration cards -- aimed to benefit the most impoverished sections of society -- was deeply corrupt.

"Go see the houses where the officials, who issue ration cards, live in. They live in luxury, they have 3-4 cars. Isn't all that money meant to help the poor," he was told.
