With PMO at the wheel, no new cars for ministers

Some of the new Union ministers are keen to buy a car but cannot, because of a diktat that all purchases above Rs 1 lakh need the PMO's approval.

Not only has Modi zipped the lips of his ministers, but he has also tied up the purse strings, it seems. The PMO terms this as an austerity measure.

In fact, after a secretary told a Union minister recently that the PMO's approval was necessary for a new car, the latter was compelled to withdraw his request.

Such is the "undeclared emergency-like situation' in the corridors of power, whispered one.
