15:22   Pink labels on liquor bottles in Telangana and other changes...
The formation of Telangana will see a couple of changes. Here's what people in Telangana will have to do following the creation of the new state.

But first, here's what remains the same in Telangana:

The postal codes will not change.
There will be no change in the passport or Adhaar card.
The calls between Telangana and Seemandhra will be local and not STD. The STD codes will remain the same.

And these are the changes...

The Registration of vehicles will change. All vehicles in Telangana bearing the AP resigtration will be TG. New vehicles will be registered under the TG number plate whereas old vehicles have been given up to 3 years to effect a change. However this process needs an approval by the Centre. There are some who feel that the boards should read TS instead of TG. This confusion has led to a complete stop in registration of numbers in Telangana over the past 10 days.

Liquor in Telangana will be sold with a pink label.

All sign boards with Andhra Pradesh will now be changed to Telangana.

The TIN (Taxpayer identification number) in Telangana will use the prefix 36 and those in Seemandhra will have to use 37.

14:06   LIVE! MHA: Why wasn't SC/ST Act slapped on Badaun rapist/murderers?

The Badaun gang rape and murder case has not just jolted the Akhilesh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh but has also come as a big challenge for the Narendra Modi government at the Centre. Considering Modi's stand of "toilet first, temple later", the Centre's sanitation department is preparing a proposal involving over Rs 1.5 lakh crore to tackle open defecation, which was the factor behind the abduction, gang rape and murder of two teenage girls in Katra Sadatganj village.

The girls, who were abducted as they went to relieve themselves last Tuesday, are Dalits.

11:11   Yakub Memon 'driving force' in 1993 blasts conspiracy: SC
Yakub Abdul Razak Memon, brother of absconding accused Tiger Memon, is the sole convict who was awarded death sentence by the Supreme Court in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case that had claimed 257 lives and left 713 injured.

The capital punishment of the other 10 death row convicts was commuted to life sentence by a bench of justices P Sathasivam and B S Chauhan which also upheld the life term awarded to 16 out of 18 convicts. The bench also allowed the appeal of Central Bureau of Investigation against the acquittal of four persons -- Sharif Abdul Gafoor Parker, Manoj Kumar Gupta, Farooq Motorwala and Mohd Rafique Usman Shaikh.

The apex court upheld the death penalty awarded to Yakub Abdul Razak Memon, a chartered accountant by profession and brother of absconding accused Tiger Memon, by the designated TADA court. The bench said Yakub Memon was the "driving force" and had played a key role in the conspiracy which "warranted death penalty".

While commuting the death sentence of 10 others to life, the bench said they were people of low strata in the society and were without any regular job and had fallen prey to the main conspirators for their "hidden motives".

The 10 convicts whose death sentence was commuted to life term were -- Abdul Gani Ismail Turk, Parvez Nazir Ahmed Shaikh, Mushtaq Tarani, Asghar Mukadam, Shahnawaz Qureshi, Shoaib Ghansar, Firoze Amani Malki, Zakir Hussain, Abdul Akhtar Khan and Farooq Pawale. In the second such exercise in four days, the Prithviraj Chavan led Congress-NCP ministry in Maharashtra was expanded here today with the induction of two Congress ministers.

Amit Deshmukh, son of party veteran late Vilasrao Deshmukh, and Abdul Sattar, also from Marathwada region were inducted.

While Sattar was sworn in as Cabinet Minister, Deshmukh was sworn in as minister of state.

Governor K Sankaranarayanan administered the oath of office to Deshmukh and Sattar at Raj Bhavan, an hour ahead of the start of the Monsoon session of state legislature.

While Deshmukh hails from Latur, Sattar belongs to Sillod in Aurangabad and is known to be a close associate of former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan who won the recent Lok Sabha poll from Nanded in Marathwada region.

Today's swearing in was preceded by confusion over a similar exercise slated yesterday for which the Protocol department had issued communication. However, the department issued another communication on Sunday, saying the ceremony was being kept on hold.

The chief minister later sought to play down the incident, claiming that no invitations were sent for any oath taking ceremony on Sunday.

Last week, NCP leader Jitendra Awhad who hails from neighbouring Thane was inducted as cabinet minister.

Chavan, who held talks with party leadership in Delhi on Sunday, returned to Mumbai in the evening and met Governor later in the night paving the way for Monday's swearing in ceremony.

08:44   Naveen to meet Modi over Polavaram, special state issues
Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi today along with his party MPs to discuss state related issues even as speculation is doing rounds that the regional outfit could extend support to the National Democratic Alliance in the Rajya Sabha, where the ruling combine has a weak strength.

Patnaik is scheduled to meet Modi at 12:15 pm and will draw the latter's attention to certain nagging state-related issues requiring Centre's intervention, leaders in Biju Janata Dal said.

BJD has 20 MPs in Lok Sabha and four MPs in Rajya Sabha.

"We will discuss issues like providing special category state status to Odisha, Bolangir-Khurda rail line, loss to Odisha from Polavaram dam project in Andhra Pradesh and crop insurance scheme for farmers," said Kalikesh Singhdeo, Lok Sabha MP of BJD.

07:45   Maharashtra ministry may be expanded today
Expansion of the Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan-led Congress-NCP ministry is scheduled to take place today.

Two ministers are set to be inducted at 9.30 am at Raj Bhavan, they said.

Chavan, who returned from Delhi on Sunday evening after meeting the Congress top leadership, met Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan at the Raj Bhavan in this connection, the sources said.

Incidentally, the hurriedly announced expansion of the Chavan-led ministry in Maharashtra had failed to materialise on Sunday, giving the Opposition ample fodder to ridicule the Congress-NCP government.

"The Congress (led) state government is hilarious! They declare (to) swear in new ministers and within two hours they hold it (back)," BJP Mumbai unit president Ashish Shelar said.

"(They have) no shame for such poor decision making skills. It is such style of work that has put the city in a coma," Shelar had said.

At the stroke of midnight, Telangana came into existence as the 29th state of India.

Celebrations began in Hyderabad and all across Telangana on Sunday night to rejoice at the culmination of the decades-old struggle in the region for carving out a separate state from Andhra Pradesh.

TRS, Congress and other political parties as well as pro-Telangana groups planned a number of events in Hyderabad and elsewhere to celebrate the realisation of the decades-long dream.

Telangana supporters gathered at People's Plaza at the picturesque Hussain Sagar Lake where cultural programmes and a dazzling display of fireworks were among the scheduled events.

The supporters also took out victory rallies and distributed sweets to celebrate the occasion.
