The Calcutta High Court has slammed the state police for what it terms, 'deriliction of duty' in the Tapas Pal case. The HC has directed the police to file an FIR within 72 hours. The HC has also directed the CID to investigate Pal's hate speech.

Last week, the Calcutta high court reprimanded Trinamool Congress MP's counsel for trying to downplay the lawmaker's shameful rape speech as an "emotional outburst" and for asking the court to pardon him because he had sought a public apology.

Justice Dipankar Datta was in no mood to take cognizance of Pal's apology. "What apology? Does a rapist get legal reprieve by seeking an apology?" Justice Datta asked Pal's counsel Rajdeep Majumdar.

The MP had threatened members of the opposition with rape and murder during a rally at Choumaha in Bengal's Nadia district on June 14.
