Just in: The draft of the amendment to the Juvenile Justice Act is ready and has been presented to the law ministry. It is expected to be tabled in the winter session of parliament.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday pushed for a more stringent Juvenile Justice Act. "You can't have a cut-off date for crime like you have for government jobs," the Supreme Court was quoted as saying.

The Supreme Court reaction came after Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi on Sunday favoured treating juveniles accused of heinous crimes like rape on par with adult offenders.

Speaking to reporters, she said according to the police, 50 per cent of all sexual crimes were committed by "16-year-olds who know the Juvenile Justice Act so they can do it."

Here is what the present JJA says.
