Just in: The Supreme Court has issued notices to state governments staying the release of the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination till July 22.

This comes in the wake of Nalini Sriharan, one of the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, filing a plea with the apex court, seeking a verdict declaring Section 435(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code as "null and void'.

This provision makes it mandatory for the State Government to consult the Centre before pre-mature release of a convict if the case was investigated by the CBI.

Nalini has been sentenced to a life term in jail.
