LIVE! 7.1 quake rocks southern Mexico, no tsunami threat

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 rattled southern Mexico today, the US Geological Survey said. The quake was centered west-southwest of the city of Tapachula in the state of Chiapas. No tsunami threat was issued.

In Mexico City, buildings and light posts swayed and local news media reported the quake was felt strongly in the Mexican states of Chiapas and Tabasco.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, though there were power failures in the western part of Guatemala. The quake was centred 92.2 kilometres below the surface.
