Paid news case: Election Commission to disqualify Ashok Chavan?
July 01, 2014  13:03

A Correspondent in New Delhi reports: Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath presided over the full bench of the Election Commission meeting today. An informed source says that the Commission discussed the case of alleged paid news against former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan.

According to insiders, Chavan may be disqualified, but there is no conformation in this regard from the EC.     The Commission had last month framed five charges against Chavan who recently won Lok Sabha polls from Nanded in Maharashtra. The EC, on the directions of the Supreme Court, had issued a notice to Chavan in May last to appear before it in connection with the case of alleged expenses made by him during the 2009 polls which were categorised as "paid news".

The poll panel also prepared a blueprint for assembly polls in Maharashtra, Haryana Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand and Arunachal Pradesh by yearend.
