A correspspondent in New Delhi reports: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spent 18 hours (in three settings) for the preparation the Budget, which will be presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the Lok Sabha on July 10.

The three departments -- revenue, economic affairs and expenditure -- took around six hours to deliberate various policies on taxation. In a first, the PM cross-questioned taxation experts about the differences between state finances and Union finances.

Modi has given free hand to the finance ministry for Budget preparations. Three joint secretaries from the finance ministry have given their inputs to the PM regarding the Budget. This was not done in the past 10 years when the United Progressive Alliance was the Centre, say insiders.
