Pawar denies secretly meeting Narendra Modi
January 31, 2014  11:06
Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar has denied media reports that he secretly met BJP's Prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi in New Delhi on January 17 to discuss the new alliance.

"News of my meeting with Narendra Modi in New Delhi on January 17 appeared in a newspaper is completely mischievous, baseless and false. During state visits or in Chief Ministers' conferences in Delhi, I meet CMs and barring these occasions, I have never met Modi in last one year," he tweeted in clarification.

Marathi daily Loksatta had claimed that Pawar may change the side after the Lok Sabha elections 2014.

Just days ago, Union Minister Praful Patel defended Modi on Gujarat riot issue.

Reacting to Rahul Gandhi's interview, Patel had said that people should respect Supreme Court's verdict in Gujarat riot case.

It is also believed that Pawar is not comfortable with the idea of working under a much-younger Rahul Gandhi.

The Congress has named Rahul as its face for the 2014 poll campaign and it is widely believed that if the UPA comes back to power, he would lead the next government.

Current Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has already ruled himself out of a thuird possible term.

But whether the BJP-NCP alliance will materialise or not remains to be seen as the BJP's Maharashtra unit is reported to be averse to the idea of joining hands with NCP.
