The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports on two Odisha labourers whose hands were chopped off by a contractor from Andhra Pradesh.

The top court issued notices to the Odisha and Andhra Pradesh governments over the incident.

The hands of the two bonded labourers were chopped off in the Kalahandi district apparently because they had refused to work.

Nineteen-year-old Dialu Nial and 35-year-old Nilambar Majhi had allegedly taken Rs 14,000 each from contractor Parame to work at a brick kiln in Andhra Pradesh. But they refused to go.

On October 15, Parame and five of his associates took the two labourers to a jungle in the Kalahandi district and chopped off their right hands. And this incident came a week after they had been held captive at a house by the accused.
