LIVE! SC commutes death sentence of 15 convicts on grounds of delay
January 21, 2014  11:12

The Supreme Court has commuted death penalty of 15 convicts on grounds of delay and mental illness. Commutation only if there's inordinate delay, the apex court has ruled, adding that the government cannot keep mercy petitions pending for years.

The verdict will impact four associates of Sandalwood smuggler Veerappan, who are convicted of killing 22 people in landmine blasts, NDTV reports. Today's verdict is also likely to have a bearing on the cases of Rajiv Gandhi's assassins Murugan, Arivu and Santhan, whose mercy petitions are also pending in the top court.
